Name Your Favorite Guitarists Of All Time
Since so many folks seem disappointed that their favorite guitarists were overlooked in the Rolling Stone poll here's your chance to make good on it by compiling your own lists. Here's some of mine (in no particular order):
Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin, Page & Plant, the Firm, session musician)
Eric "Roscoe" Ambel (From Steve Earle's Dukes)
David Lindley (solo artist, session musician and Jackson Browne sideman)
Jerry Garcia
Sonny Landreth (solo artist, session musician and a member of John Hiatt's Goners)
Peter Buck (R.E.M.)
Jason Isbell (Drive-By Truckers)
Mike Cooley (Drive-By Truckers)
Duane Allman (Allman Brothers, Derek and the Dominoes, session musician)
Allen Collins (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Steve Gaines (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Bill Kirchen (Commander Cody's Lost Planet Airmen)
Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin, Page & Plant, the Firm, session musician)
Eric "Roscoe" Ambel (From Steve Earle's Dukes)

Prince
BB King
George Benson
Roy Clark (this one's gonna cause some s***)
Chuck Berry
Jimmy Page
Carlos Santanna

Why is that, because he's a country artist? I guess I didn't make it clear but this thread is open to all guitarists from all genres especially since that seems to be one of the biggest gripes about the Rolling Stone list. Personally, I think Roy Clark is a great guitarist. I haven't heard him play in years but I remember Hee Haw and seeing him several times on The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson.pair8head wrote:Okay I'm gonna play this time.

By the way, it's "Jimi" Hendrix, not "Jimmy". I hope that doesn't stir up a hornet's next but the way I look at it, if people can constantly correct people around here for mispelling "Buffett" I can certainly do my best to politely point out the correct spelling of one of the best guitarists of our times name.

Re: Name Your Favorite Guitarists Of All Time
I love Lindley's pedal steel work but right now I'd have to say Robert Randolph can give almost any pedal steel player out there a run for their money, Lindley included...BuPHett wrote:Lindley on the pedal steel is the best...Jahfin wrote:Since so many folks seem disappointed that their favorite guitarists were overlooked in the Rolling Stone poll here's your chance to make good on it by compiling your own lists. The reason I expected s*** for including Roy wasn't because he's country but because many people don't like him because of his "Hee Haw" days. Many people never were exposed to the fact that he is capable of picking up any stringed instrument and in a short while play it like he'd been taking lessons his whole life.

That's cool. I never thought I'd see the day I'd say I liked Buck Owens (especially because of that gaudy-ass red, white and blue geetar he used to play on Hee Haw) but I do. I think more than anything it has to do with Dwight Yoakam and the "Bakersfield sound" in general. Ringo's take on "Act Naturally" might also have something to do with it.pair8head wrote:No worries on the Jimi / JimmyJahfin wrote:Why is that, because he's a country artist? Any Doc Watson fans out there?
Y'know what I'd be interested in seeing? I'd love to take this list of guitar magna cum laudes and add one album name & track title that in your (collective "your") opinion best shows off the talents of the guitar players you posted.
I, for one, am always interested in expanding my musical horizons (that's one of the things I've appreciate most about Buffett - the other AMAZING musicians he's introduced me to!) and providing an album name for each of these guitar players would allow me to expand my collection by selecting the crème de la crème of each artist...
Whadda ya say? Help a sailor out?!?!

Good idea but speaking just for myself, it will be very hard to do since so many guitarists have more than one shining moment but I'm willing to give it my best shot.Margarita Will wrote:Y'know what I'd be interested in seeing?
