who ate the last mango in paris?

Post by Hoosierparrot »

fellow parrothead and i are in disagreement. I always thought that Jimmy was referring to the "legend" as being ernest Hemingway. My buddy thinks he is referring to Captain Tony cause thats the bar he was in.
Tell me please, who really ate the last mango in Paris?

Sorry, I was hungry and I didn't know it was the last one.

If I remember correctly, the words came from a mix of bathroom stall graffiti at Captain Tony's and talks with Tony directly. However I could very well be wrong.

yeah
he went back to the head,
read upon those dingy walls the words the old man said

So who is the "old man"?

Well, considering Hemingway died 10 years before Jimmy made it down to Key West, I'd say the song is about Capt. Tony...

...that is if you believe that the exchange in the song between the "eater" and Jimmy actually took place.

Well if you are taking the song literally, I would have to guess Captain Tony.

I went down to Captain Tony's to get out of the heat
When I heard a voice call out to me, "Son, come have a seat"
I had to search my memory as I looked into those eyes
Our lives change like the weather but a legend never dies

Hemingway died in 1960 and he was living in Europe during his last years. JB had never been to Key West until the 70s when Jerry Jeff took him down there.

Hemingway was living in Europe during his last years (oh yeah, and he was dead before Jimmy got into the music business.)
this was in another thread, but I can't say it was Tony in the song. The lines about Third World girls from Buzeos, waking up dry beneath the African sky, and high-fashion model wives just doesn't sound like the Capt.

That's why I think its based more off some bathroom graffiti.

I think "mango" is a euphemism and Ron Jeremy probably ate the last one.

I think a better question would be why did Paris run out of mangos, and have they gotten any more since?

I'm stickin' with my original answer in the other thread: Jimmy went down to Cap'n Tony's, slides into a seat at the bar, and there is an old guy telling stories about his life, kinda like Hemingway, somewhat not, sitting next to him (the one who issued the invite). The stories flow, the liquor flows, and then Jimmy heads back to the head to get rid of some stuff, and the process starts.

I believe the "mango" was actually a transvestite on "holiday" from Duval St.
I know Jimmy Buffett, Jimmy Buffett is a friend of mine. Son, you're no Jimmy Buffett!

I've always thought the song was about Captain Tony's life and adventures. :D

Sunday, July 2, 1961, is the day Hemingway killed himself.

I don't think he was ever married to a woman who could be "high fashion model" (unless maybe Pauline Pfeiffer) and I'm pretty sure he didn't have a good run on Wall Street.
Gentilly ... 42 years is a long time to wait .... a Northeast Texas woman can hope.

ummm... dear... you are a cute blonde. The old guy was probably pushing the limits of the new pacemaker trying to keep from groping you before the picture. He would have said anything to impress you... :D
