Total Disrespect!!!!!

Post by USMParrothead »

I have been coming to this site for many years now, mainly to keep up to date on what Jimmy and the Coral Reefers are doing. I have gotten and given some great information over the years, but the recent inmaturity over the deaths and tragic loss on the gulf coast has really turned my stomach. I am embarassed to actually have singed up for a web site that will actually alow idiots to post disrespectful garbage under the guise of, being cheerful and "trying to keep it light".
There are many good people that frequent this site and I am sure they are equally embarassed by the behavior here.
I hope and pray that all of you trying to "keep your sense of humor" never have to go through anything like this. There are people still trapped in thier attics in a flooded city, there are many others that weren't able to hang on to life long enough to be rescued. There were loved ones ripped from their familiy memeber's arms as they tried despartly to get them to safety. There are countless elderly and people without cars that never had a chance to evacuate, they never stood a chance.
There are tens of thousands of refugees in my city (lafayette, LA) right now that have been told they might get to go check out the damage in a couple of months, in the meantime, what are they to do. They are countless friends and family memebers that we can only pray have somehow found their way out of harms way, but 3 days without a phone call of any kind leaves one with a sick feeling.
Like i said, i used to come here to get the latest info on tour dates and such, but i have come to the conclussion that i would rather never see another jimmy show than to put up with the insensitive and desrepectful trash that a large percentage to the people here post "all for the sake of humor."
some things are just not funny, this happens to be one of them.
I studied the life at sea, I studied the life in bars. Never passed my S.A.T.s so i thought I'd study extra hard.

I think I saw something a little worse than this from my office window just under 4 years ago. At the time I didn't think it was my business to go on a message board and complain about people who didn't react as I thought they should. I still don't.

Having been thru 100 and 500 year floods after record winter snowfalls, and windchills that would probably kill you; having spent days sandbagging and watching the effort go for naught; after watching the record floodstage come to within 30' laterally from my folks' house, I think I can operate with a sense of humour. It was what kept us going then, it'll keep us going now. (and as usual, in the face of adversity, some of the humour gets kinda dark.) Haven't really seen that yet. But, if you find the humour here on the site to be morally-reprehensible and repugnant, just keep this in mind USM: 1st Amendment freedom of speech is just one of the many things that makes this country great.

So, it's ok for someone to come on here and complain about getting a cold cheeseburger from Checker's while making light of what people are going through in New Orleans? If that's people's way of thinking, I'd say they need to get their priorities in order.

No, you didn't address that post specifically but in effect you seemed to be saying no one has a right to come on here and tell people how to react and then you compared the hurricane devastation to the terrorist attacks on September 11th, as if it lessens their pain.

Technically he compared his reaction to Sept 11 to people's reactions to this. Totally different. He said that if that didn't make him feel the need to get preachy, then why should this?

I didn't really see anyone getting "preachy", I saw someone expressing their disgust at how the tragedy in New Orleans is being discussed by certain parties at this site.

What I said was I didn't think it was MY business to question how people reacted. It isn't, everyone reacts in their own way. And nobody has the right to tell people how to react. You or I may not like the way someone else reacts but we don't have the right to tell them they should react differently. I also don't think the fact that I experienced September 11 the way few people on this board did lessens the pain of what's happening on the Gulf Coast. I was responding to the original poster's remark that he hoped none of us would ever have to go through something like this.

BTW, I'm not trying to be a ball breaker here, I'm just clarifying what I said.

but doesn't a thermostat just react to conditions, and a thermometer observe impartially? :D

C'mon, everyone. Take a deep breath. I'm pretty sure there's not one of us who doesn't feel for the misery and tragedy that the people of the Gulf Coast are suffering. Quite obviously, people react to and deal with tragedy in different ways. How 'bout if we all just take a step back and focus on what unites us, rather than on what divides us.
