First time I heard this song was 20 years ago. Wasn't until the History Channel became a "favorite" on the channels list that I learned what the lyrics were actually talking about.

It looks like Conched and I got the same email today....

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get the song to download...damn dialup. But here are the lyrics, and the website is encouraging all to donate to some hurricane relief organization.
LOUISIANA 1927/© 1974 Randy Newman All Rights Reserved/Performed by Jay Johnson

What has happened down here is the winds have changed
Clouds rolled in from the north and it started to rain
Well it rained real hard for a real long time
Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline

The river rose all day
The river rose all night
Some people got lost in the flood
Some people got away alright
The river have busted through clear on down to Plaquemines
Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline

CHORUS
Louisiana, Louisiana
They're tryin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away
Louisiana, Louisiana
They're tryin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away

President Coolidge came down in a railroad train
With a little fat man with a note-pad in his hand
The President say, "Little fat man isn't it a shame - what the river has done
To this poor crackers land."

CHORUS

The only version that I've heard is on Eddy Raven and Jo-el Sonnier's "Cookin Cajun" album.....And a great album it is

sonofabeach,
You sure have lots of good music and that one looks really good. I listened at Amazon.com to Jo-el Sonnier's clip. Good stuff.

It's so cool when Jimmy breaks into Jambalaya when he gets wound up.

I've got it, it's from the New Orleans Arena show in 1999 or 2000. I'm not certain on the year, but it was the encore of his only show to date at the New Orleans Arena (he has since played at M'ville and the Fairgrounds). It was cool outside and it was during the arena's inaugural year. I think it was November of 1999, but it could have just as easily been early 2000.
