Anyone care to copy and paste for peeps like me too lazy to register?
You’re still grinning, we’re still winning, nothing left to say
I’m still gliding as I go flying down this endless wave

A WRIGLEY STATE OF MIND
For 2 days, Jimmy Buffett and his fans will take over the Cubs' home and turn it into Margaritaville

By Sanhita Sen
Tribune staff reporter
Published September 2, 2005

SOME WILL COME for the tropical tunes, some for the vacationing atmosphere. Some even hope to break the Cubs curse the way a Jimmy Buffett show at Fenway Park did for the Red Sox last year.

Whatever the reason, some 78,000 Buffett fans will transform Wrigley Field into Margaritaville on Sunday and Monday, as the storied ballpark hosts its first ever full-fledged concert.

"It's going to be a once in a lifetime concert," said Susi O'Neil, social director of the Chicago Parrothead Club, a non-profit group of Buffett fans who organize social and community outreach activities. "It's going to be so overwhelming that the city of Chicago is going to say, 'Oh my God, we had no idea.' "

Soaking up the sunshine and three decades worth of laid-back melodies, Buffett fans are known to travel cross-country to follow the 58-year-old crooner's tours, creating an island paradise wherever they go. No outfit is too summery amid the straw hats and grass skirts (often on men), bathing suits and brightly colored leis. Many fans plan their vacations around when and where Buffett is playing.

"I think they've underestimated the attendance," O'Neil said. "They're going to have huge crowds standing outside and listening to the music." Laughing, she added, "I honestly don't think they'll ever have another music concert [at Wrigley]."

But Elevated Concerts, the company promoting the show, does plan to do more events at the hallowed ballpark in the future and has taken several steps to prepare.

Compared with the "notoriously wild" Buffett shows of the past in venues such as Alpine Valley and Tweeter Center, the Wrigley Field show will be a lot more structured, O'Neil said. There will be no lawn seating, for example, so fans accustomed to getting up and mixing with the crowd will probably be confined to one reserved chair.

To protect the ballpark, the entire field will be covered with terraplast and protective mats. The combination of materials "allows the grass to breathe through a series of airholes and has a cushion built in it to protect the sod," said Scott Gelman, vice president of Elevated Concerts.

And tailgating--a time-honored Buffett tradition--isn't allowed at the Wrigley parking lot, which would be small for gathering anyway.

"We encourage people without tickets to not be in the neighborhood," Gelman said.

The stage, set up in center field, will not be visible from most of the rooftops surrounding Wrigley Field, but some fans don't seem to mind. The sports bar Murphy's Bleachers has rented out its rooftop for at least one of the concert nights.

The renters "knew you wouldn't be able to see the stage and we don't know what the sound will be," said owner Beth Murphy. "This is all new to us."

And the lack of parking lot tailgating won't depress the concert spirit either. The Parrothead Club will host its pre-party, called Tail Great 2005, about six blocks away at the Blue Bayou Restaurant, a cajun bar at 3734 N. Southport Ave. Also nearby at 3216 N. Sheffield Ave., Trader Todd's will host its own tailgate party Sunday.

"Buffett fans are Buffett fans," O'Neil said. "Everyone loves Jimmy's music because it takes you on vacation. His concerts are an experience."

But believe it or not, this fantasy lifestyle isn't just about drinking and partying. A noted philanthropist and environmentalist, Buffett also encourages his fans to be charitable.

From this show, the Parrothead Club will donate much of the proceeds from the pre-party to the Alzheimer's Association and other Chicago charities.

"Party with a purpose," O'Neil said. "That's our motto."
