since i wasn't one of the lucky 324 (plus or minus) people to buy the original vinyl release, i'll have to critique the cd that surfaced roughly 2 years ago, which is even better since it has bonus tracks.

With the exception of "Abandoned on Tuesday" and "Don't Bring Me Candy" (which are both quite good if you can find them) this is the beginning of it all. And it's a bit of a rough start at that...literally. There's a lot of suffering on this disc, and not only the kind jimmy sings about in "Ellis Dee", "Richard Frost", "There's Nothing Soft About Hard Times", and "I Can't Be Your Hero Today" (to name a few), but it shows in HIM as well. Because of the odds against him in the country/folk genre & the reaction this album got he actually had Everything to lose and Nothing to gain. So it's a surprise that there is hardly a track on here that is "totally weak". Truckstop salvation is the weakest track on this cd; it falls flat on its face from the opening note.
Every song has a message. The best ones are projected in "The Christian", "Turnabout", "I Can't Be Your Hero Today", and in the original version of "The Captain and the Kid".
If you're used to jimmy's newer tunes this is a hard disc to listen to, but these are his roots whether you like them or not.

2 1/2 coronas (out of 5)

Headparrothead,
Are you sure you're not a writer for Billboard like some rich beach bum used to be?

Kind of a mixture of 60's folk rock and southern hillbilly music. Reminds me of some of Michael Nesmith's stuff.
