A Long Island Rail Road worker from Hempstead was seriously injured Friday after he fell from a signal bridge into a 22,000-volt overhead power line west of Woodside.
Signal inspector Henry Gutierrez, 35, who has been with the railroad about seven years, fell while stripping wood decking on a signal bridge, according to Chris Natale, general chairman of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen. Gutierrez was wearing a safety harness, but he struck the 22,000-volt overhead lines that power Amtrak trains as he fell.
Fellow workers pulled an unconscious Gutierrez back onto the bridge as they awaited help from the New York Fire Department and Emergency Services workers, Natale said. He was in critical condition at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where he was being treated for burns.
"Our hearts and prayers go out to him and to his wife," Natale said.
LIRR spokesman Sam Zambuto said service to and from Penn Station was suspended from 12:30 to just after 2 p.m. Friday as LIRR crews shut off power. Three trains were delayed near the Woodside station, arriving about 90 minutes late. Eastbound trains left from Jamaica and LIRR tickets were honored on subways at Jamaica, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, Woodside and Penn Station. Westbound trains were terminated at Jamaica. Port Washington service was suspended for the entire branch. It was restored in time for the evening rush hour. The accident remains under investigation, officials said.
Gutierrez' mother, Alicia, said his wife was heading to the hospital Friday after learning about the accident. The couple has three children, ages, 13, 10 and 7.
"We're hopeful for a full recovery and he is in our prayers," Zambuto said.
