Pet Peeve

Post by mommar »

Driving around today really brought to the forefront of my mind one of my biggest pet peeves. Being September 11, I noticed how many people had those decorative house flags flying, you know the ones, they welcome you to their home, they proclaim what season it is and they let you know which team is the occupants favorites. BUT DID THEY HAVE AN AMERICAN FLAG!!!!!! anywhere in sight?????? NOOOOOOOOO, not even a paper one on their front door, or a decal in their window, or a small parade one in their potted plants. I just don't like flying a decorative flag, when you don't display an American Flag on Patriotic Days, that's my pet peeve. I understand that some people can only display one flag on their pole, but come on, if it's a Patriotic day, please display the US Flag somewhere!!!!!!!!

Thanks for letting me start this thread gang, I'd just like to know what some of your pet peeves are.

Being a very patriotic person, I know exactly how you feel. In the past I always flew The American Flag on Patiotic Days with the POW MIA flag flying below it. In fact, I'd definately be flying mine today except for the fact that Hurricane Charley killed my flag pole last year and I have yet to replace it. Hmmm, never thought about the window decal idea! :)

You know, pre-Sept. 11th I had some of those amusing flags and I pretty much just flew the Am. Flag on holidays. Since Sep 11th those other flags ahve been in a rubbermaid box under the guestroom bed. They really look silly to me now. Weather permitting I fly the Am. Flag only.

Every house on my block has a U.S. flag flying in front of it except for one. And the man who lives there is a widower, 88 years old, World War II Vet. Probably a good idea if I DIDN'T give him a piece of my feeble mind, since I'm guessing he's most likely paid his dues.

I had a pet peeve once, but I never knew what to feed it.

Sorry - getting back on topic .....

If you are going to fly the American flag make sure that the flag is in good repair — no tattered and faded flags, please — and that you at least try to follow some of the other points of proper flag etiquette such as taking it in after dark (unless it is illuminated) or when it is raining.

Not the most pleasant of topics but spitting. While I understand the occasional need what baffles me are the people that think nothing of spitting on the sidewalk. Disgusting. How can somebody be walking along, summon up something from the darkest depths of their lungs and then deposit it on the sidewalk like it is no big deal? Who raised these people? Not to mention now that the weather will be getting colder we will have these little frozen treasures around till spring. Now that I got myself all spun up....it's time to walk across town watching where I step!

I went shopping tonight, and needed to avoid about 10 shopping carts left in the parking lot. Seriously, is your life that important that you can't walk 10 feet to put the shopping cart away?!

Guess what Boys Scouts LOVE: the opportunity to properly retire a worn or damaged flag. (So do American Legion and other vet groups, but work with me here).
If you have a damaged flag, or an old one in need of a decent retirement, donate it to a scout group in your area. Next time they burn a big bonfire for their group, they will be glad to honorably retire the flag for you.
Another cool tradition is the continuance of the ashes. Many Boy Scouts have in their possession some inherited ashes from bonfires of the past. (Some as old as Robert Baden-Powell). They will sprinkle the ashes into a newly built bonfire, and then anybody is welcome to take ashes out at the end. In that way the ashes can be passed on to exponential numbers of scouts, who can then pass it on themselves.
