Actually, if I used a map or globe that showed how the "southies" see the world, she'd probably get it.

But how do I explain to a 8 year old why when you're at the South Pole that you're not upside down????
good one. except for one point. the north pole is not the "top" of the earth. the earth spins (rotates) about a rod stuck thru the earth from the north pole to the south pole. this rod is tilted about 23.5 degrees from vertical.creeky wrote:Here is a map of the world ..... you guys seem to have the wrong one![]()
I guess it is the same as people that live on the side (everywhere but the north pole) - why does she not feel that she is standing sideways???
I'll believe yaAlbatrossFlyer wrote:good one. except for one point. the north pole is not the "top" of the earth. the earth spins (rotates) about a rod stuck thru the earth from the north pole to the south pole. this rod is tilted about 23.5 degrees from vertical.creeky wrote:Here is a map of the world ..... you guys seem to have the wrong one![]()

I did steal the batteries out of her "Bounce Around Tigger" toy once when I was in a pinch.
This post makes me feel sleepy and/or dumb.nycparrothead wrote:Since my guard base goes there to support the national science foundation and I know a few hundred people that have been there I can so no. You are not upside-down if you're in Antarctica and standing on the South Pole, you are only upside-down when you are standing at the north pole, although the magnetic north pole isn't at a land mass it is in the water or generally on a iceberg so you may be standing or swimming when you are there but either way you are upside-down although if you're swimming, you won't be for long because it's very cold and you'll be dead within' seconds so you better hope that when you go to the north pole that there is an iceberg floating over it for you to stand on....buffettbride wrote:you're in Antarctica and standing on the South Pole?
