Actually, if I used a map or globe that showed how the "southies" see the world, she'd probably get it. :D

If you are then and standing on your head - yes .... otherwise .. no ....
Ok. This I get.

But how do I explain to a 8 year old why when you're at the South Pole that you're not upside down????
easy.

tell her that no matter where we stand on the earth, we say our feet point down to the center of the earth and we look up to the sky.

which by the way is a simple way of describing what an einsteinian relativistic frame of reference is

I guess it is the same as people that live on the side (everywhere but the north pole) - why does she not feel that she is standing sideways???
good one. except for one point. the north pole is not the "top" of the earth. the earth spins (rotates) about a rod stuck thru the earth from the north pole to the south pole. this rod is tilted about 23.5 degrees from vertical.

take a flat piece of cardboard and hold it horizontal, lower it until it touches the top of a globe. the point it touches won't be the north pole. if you then spin the globe, the point the cardboard touches will actually be a circle based on the rotation of the earth....

Since my guard base goes there to support the national science foundation and I know a few hundred people that have been there I can so no. You are not upside-down if you're in Antarctica and standing on the South Pole, you are only upside-down when you are standing at the north pole, although the magnetic north pole isn't at a land mass it is in the water or generally on a iceberg so you may be standing or swimming when you are there but either way you are upside-down although if you're swimming, you won't be for long because it's very cold and you'll be dead within' seconds so you better hope that when you go to the north pole that there is an iceberg floating over it for you to stand on....
This post makes me feel sleepy and/or dumb.
