Sportscaster Chris Schenkel dies at 82

Sportscaster Chris Schenkel, whose easygoing baritone won over fans during a more than six-decade broadcasting career in which he covered everything from bowling to the Olympics, died Sunday following a long battle with emphysema. He was 82. Schenkel's wife, Fran, said she and the couple's two sons were at her husband's side when he passed away early Sunday at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind., where he had been hospitalized for two weeks after undergoing surgery for a bleeding ulcer. "He was a very, very sincere, loving man who loved what he did," said Fran Schenkel, noting that they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in January.

I grew up listening to him broadcast Peggy Fleming's skating. What a class act he was.

Sail on, Mr. Schenkel.

Chris Schenkel was one of the first sports broadcasters I ever heard.

When I was a kid, hearing his voice made me think that I was listening
to the most important sporting event happening in the world. 8)

I heard about his death yesterday, while watching the US Open. His voice is one I will remember, and he will be missed.

I wish we had more announcers like him. Instead we're stuck with morons like Chris Berman who think they're more important than the event they're supposed to be covering.
what I really mean . . . I wish you were here
