Defiant suspect rejects advice, lands in jail
KEY WEST — A local bar employee might have saved himself a trip to jail and felony charges if he had listened to Officer Larry Caruso at 2:45 a.m. Saturday and simply gotten into a cab and left the downtown area.
Caruso was on routine patrol in the 200 block of Duval Street when he saw Bryan Shipman being physically removed from the bar. Caruso repeatedly told the 30-year-old man to get in a cab with his friends and go home. But Shipman reportedly crossed his arms over his chest and defiantly stared at Caruso, who eventually arrested him.
While searching the suspect, Caruso found $1,447 in cash in the man's pocket, along with a half-gram of cocaine and a half-gram of marijuana, according to police reports.
The suspect allegedly told Caruso that he works at a nearby bar and the money came from employees sharing their tips with him. Caruso pointed out that $1,447 was a lot in tips. Shipman faces charges of possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana.
You just can't fix stupid.
