OK! I know my limitations, or so I thought. I know that for some reason any time I eat anything with Old Bay seasoning I break out in hives.
Shrimp on there own or with cocktail sauce is not a problem, I can eat them by the pound. Tonight for some reason I have gone into hives while eating some lovely tasting shrimp. They are a frozen brand I have never had before. I have taken a couple of 25mg non name brand Bena... like tabs. I am fine just wondering If someone can tell me what the H.E. double hockey sticks is going on?

Food additives and preservatives are often a cause of allergic reactions - check the label on the package. There is no MSG in Old Bay - so it's not that. . Frozen shrimp contain more sulfites than Fresh. . see if anything on the package ends in 'sulfite'. .or sulfur dioxide. . you could be sensitive to it. .. but you would have the same reaction to potato chips, soup mixes. .BEER. .WINE!

I don't know what to tell you. . Don't eat the frozen shrimp again! :D

Feel better!

Not a doctor. . just telling you what I know!

Right !! Also TSP or TPP

when I was in the biz we used a lot ot that stuff

:oops: oK I will try and spell them

TSP = Tri Sodium Phosphate

TPP Tri Poly Phosphate..

it would leave our arms Red and raw after handleing the shrimp
after it was "Infused" with the Chemicals

I PMd MGG to let him know it is not uncommon to develop an allergy to shellfish even after you've been eating it for years with no problems. Shrimp can be one of the worst culprits. :-? :(

Up until about 3-4 years ago I was able to eat any form of shellfish in any quantity. In about the course of a year, I realized real quick that I couldn't eat it any more; made me violently ill for the better part of a day regardless of whether it was fresh, frozen, grilled, sauteed, whatever.

:( Don't know what brought it on, but I do know I miss crab crakes and lobster.

Have you eaten shrimp alot before? Or just a few times... Allergic reactions don't occur on the first exposure to something. The first couple exposures just create an antibody that is triggered the next time the allergen is introduced. If you haven't eaten shrimp alot before, then my guess would be that you are now allergic to shrimp and will be for the rest of your life.
IF you have eaten shrimp alot in the past, then it's more likely that there was just something in that particular shrimp that got you...
