plasma tv recommendations?

My 36 inch tv is very close to crapping out and I've been wanting to go bigger and better.
My wife and I have been out all day looking at 42 inch Plasma tvs, preferaly with HD. We're going 42 inch because it fits the entertainment center. Does anyone here have one and if so, is the HD really that big of a deal?
After looking around and reading online it seems to me that you get what you pay for. I guess that's how it is with most things.
We almost got suckered into a couple of brands I'd never heard of (Norwood-Micro and Insignia) but decided against it and to wait and research a little more.
I've heard about picture quality not being as good on Plasmas and the possiblity that the pixels can mess up after a while but that's prolly just the ammount of $$$ you are willing to spend issue.
We're trying to keep it around $1500 but may have to go up to $1800.
Any ideas or info?

go with an LG LCD sure it may cost you a lil more---but the quality and life you will get out of this tv will be far more worth then the amount you spend on a plasma.

Thanks, I just googled and found out the difference.
One of the customers in Best Buy today also reccommended LCD to me, of course I had no idea at the time what he meant. Good thing I waited
I thought that all thin styled tvs were called plasmas

Definitely go LCD....Plasma was the best...Was...LCD's last longer, there no burn in possibility as well as smoother picture, and better reproduction of lighter colors especially whites. ...Hey what can I say..I'm a nerd and almost got a job at Sears selling TV's....If I were buying I would stay away from Plasma for now

Nope--another thing is if you do watch a lot of espn, cnn, any news channel--- the scroll bar at the bottom of the screen can be implanted on the plasmas if you watch that channel for a prolonged amount of time.

Insignia is best buys house brand of tvs. I almost bought a 27inch HDTV (Tube) about a month or so ago, but decided against it. Savin the bucks for a big 60+ inch LCD.

Thanks for all of the info ya'll. LCD seems to be the way to go and I'm soooo glad that I did not impulse buy..Thankfully my wife stopped me from that.
Now I can relay the info to the wife and she'll think I'm really smart and up on things

Every one has commented on the length of plasmas....

Typically, they last about 10 years. If you plan on keeping your television for another decade, this MIGHT be a consideration.

I couldn't agree more. HD definately DOES make a huge difference. You've got to watch a Monday Night Football game on HD - it's incredible. Even if the teams playing stink, and I don't like either, I still can't take my eyes off of it. Now....about the p***......... :o

LCD is the best picture, but are typically more expensive than plasma.

Plasma TV's can experience burn-in, but only if a picture is left on for an extended time. It really shouldn't be much of a concern as long as you don't leave DVD splash screens up for hours or always have on a station with a scroll (as mentioned earlier). The original plasmas had a 5-ish year life expectancy, but now it's much better (closer to 10). Also, recent plasmas have a better black level, so the pictures are a lot more vivid now.

I have a Panasonic plasma that is great. The Sony Grand Wegas are awesome, but you pay for them.

Best thing was about 2 years ago when they had that Outdoor hockey game in Canada on HD. I think it was Toronto vs Montrel. Most amazing thing I have ever seen in HD. Also the best channel for HD is actually PBS. Just amazing what Public Brodcasting can do.

I went back out shopping/browsing again with the wife after reading some of your posts and some more research. This time we went to BJs Wholesale and even Super Walmart. Also been looking online.

Zanth- you are right, LCDs are more expensive than plasmas.
I've got my eye on this one

Very nice candidate. Here's a little tip for going shopping and comparing. Grab a few DVD's and bring them with you to test each set. This way you always have a common frame of reference. Here are some suggestions:

Vivid landscapes - Something like Castaway
Action - Matrix type, with explosions and fast movement
Fleshtones - something with well lit scenes with people talking

You can go way more in-depth if you want, but those are some ideas...
