I don't care who ya are. That right there's funny!
I feel kinda dumb for not getting it.
Sorry, I should have posted a link for the chronologically-challenged.

That is Rose Mary Woods (Nixon's secretary) who was blamed for the famous 18-minute gap in the White House tapes.

Good luck, and I hope you get what you need to help your sister.
So true; my nutso ex didn't seem to have any problem tapping my phone. I can't imagine how it would be legal for any individual to record a conversation w/out either notifying the other party or w/ police involvement. I found out because I found the tapes, and it sounds bad enough..."my phone was tapped...," but when you actually hear your conversations w/ friends and family that no one else had a RIGHT to listen to, it REALLY p*** you off! I even thought of turning him in, except the one tape that I took (they were in his glove compartment, and I didn't know what they were--I just grabbed one and took it back to work with me), had a conversation w/ me telling my friend how I hit the post office fence (and dented it pretty badly). Glad those days are over!

Be careful, depending on where you call, you WILL have to tell the other person you are recording the conversation. If they do not consent, you are LEGALLY required to turn off the recorder. If you do not, either get conset or tell the other person you are recording, you CAN be arrested. That is why when you call a major company's customer support line, they always say your conversation is either or maybe recorded.
you don't have to tell if there's an audible beep every 5 secs or so
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

But still, the other person has the right to tell you to turn it off.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Life is short, live long!!

In the great state of Utah you do not have to inform the other person that you are recording their call and if you are a business based in Utah you can legally record any and all calls to and from your business without telling the caller or the person receiving the call. And the real kicker is that even if you ask is this call being recorded and ask that the recorder be turned off the employer or his representative doesn't have to turn it off. So it varies greatly from state to state and therefore I would suggest that you check with an attorney located in your state to get the details.

You can or used to go to radio shack and get a mic that sticks to your phone and record it. Some cassette recorders ecven came with them.

The days of all the clicks and sounds of you being recorded are mostly long gone.
COMSEC ( Communications Security) is huge concern with those that deal with such information.
ALL electronic communications are subject to monitoring and being recorded at any time. This includes telephone/cellphone/walkaround phones/faxes/radio/etc....

Ever heard of the NSA? The NSA has maintained a classified base and listening post, in Austrailia for many many years.

NEVER believe any electronic communications are 100% secure. Anyone ever heard of "ECHELON"Do a search on it.

Ever heard of "CARNIVORE" ? Carnivore has a new and polite and more friendly name now. Try this site http://www.epic.org/privacy/carnivore/ for more info.

There are programs people could or you could put on your puter to monitor what they do with it, where they visit, who they write and what they say....etc....

For more information on electronic surveillance, check with www.epic.org and your own state laws. There are many numerous laws out there, but they do not stop people from breaking them. People break speed limits for example do they? People break many laws either intentionally or unintentionally. Some are violent and some are not...

If you need the info for personal reasons and your files only and not to be used for anything else....perhaps you could do so....I could not tell you. It would be best to ask someone that would know in your state...a Private Detective or security consultant or a lawyer... ask several of them..... or even ask a judge or paralegals... You may find it is quite clear or it is a grey area.
Roll with the punches, play all of your hunches...come what may...
