Whoa...Phins up to Bob Williams...I especially like the last two paragraphs...pretty much says it all...
Letters Attest To Troops' Need For Your Support
By JUDY HILL St. Pete Times Forum
Published: Oct 20, 2005
I wasn't surprised that Bob Williams was the first person to step forward to help Master Sgt. Cesar Howell assist orphans in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Reaching out to service people -- to make their lives a little easier, to remind them that people at home care about them, to help them with their causes -- seems to be as natural to him as breathing.
Williams is the Wesley Chapel businessman and Navy veteran who sends literally tons of care packages and fills the wish lists of U.S. troops in the war zone.
My column about Howell, a Florida National Guardsman from Tampa who is with the 2-116th Field Artillery, ran Oct. 13. An e-mail from Williams was in my inbox when I logged on for the first time that morning.
"We will cover the good Master Sgt. with school supplies," Williams wrote.
"We are currently sending to nine different people at Camp Phoenix [where Howell is stationed in Kabul]."
Deja Vu All Over Again
So, once again, Williams sees a need and responds.
And, once again, he needs postage money.
I've said all this before, but it bears repeating.
Much of what he sends overseas is donated, including snack items from Snyders of Hanover and Starbucks Coffee.
But he buys an enormous amount of the stuff: sheets, pillows, bed lights, hand warmers, phone cards, personal hygiene items, mousetraps, microwave ovens, DVD players, batteries, small toys and school supplies to give local kids, and more.
Williams' family-owned company, Sifter Parts, pays for much of what he sends.
But postage, which costs between $2,000 and $4,000 a month, imposes a huge strain.
A few companies and folks contribute regularly to the cause. But not enough to sustain the shipments.
Many of you do send individual donations when reminded. Thanks to those who do.
Consider this the September and October reminders, since I didn't write about Williams last month.
For information about what he does and what the troops need, e-mail Williams at Sift@aol.com. Or call (813) 991-9400. Or just make a check out to the U.S. Postmaster and mail it to P.O. Box 7560, Wesley Chapel FL 33544.
Even $1 helps.
If you play golf, the Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce is hosting an Oct. 28 tournament at MacDill Air Force Base to benefit Williams. Call (813) 994-8534 for information and registration. Or go to www.wesleychapelchamber.com.
Packages From Home Worth Millions
I know there are many worthy causes competing for your charity dollars, particularly since the Gulf Coast hurricanes and the earthquake in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.
But supporting Williams doesn't take much, and the impact on the troops is enormous.
"First I would like to say that we greatly appreciate everything that you all have done for us," one G.I. e-mailed Williams from Iraq. "You have truly made our living conditions much better."
Another, with a North Carolina National Guard unit, wrote, "I just received two boxes of goodies that you sent us and cannot thank you enough for what you are doing! What a blessing and encouragement it is to receive things from home that we don't normally find here in Iraq. Just knowing that there are wonderful people like yourself who support us brings a tremendous boost to morale."

Not too much I can say at the moment...
In 40 days, GI would have been home
Army 1st Lt. Kevin Joseph Smith e-mailed his fiancee every day from Iraq. On Thursday, he didn't.
By ALEXANDRA ZAYAS
Published December 11, 2005
BRANDON - The family of Army 1st Lt. Kevin Joseph Smith gathered Saturday at his mother's home to mourn.
Inside, a dozen family members prayed with a minister from Immanuel Lutheran Church & School. Nobody else was admitted into the home. His stepfather Ancil Stephens even shooed away the dog.
"No, you can't come in here," he said to the dog, closing the door. "There are too many tears in here."
Smith, a 28-year-old West Point graduate from Brandon, was killed Thursday by a bomb in Baghdad, about 40 days before he was scheduled to return home.
He had been in Iraq for about six months, and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 76th Field Artillery, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart, Ga.
Smith was killed after insurgents detonated an explosive as Smith's convoy of engineers went along the Tigris River to a power plant, his father told the Associated Press on Friday. The blast also injured three other soldiers, he said.
Smith died within 30 seconds, his mother told the AP. The bomb tore a hole in the Humvee and caused massive injury to his right shoulder and upper body, she said.
"His last words were: "Look after my men,"' she said.

I just got done watching a program on Discovery Health about the wounded returning home to their families from Iraq...I think even my pups are tearing up...
God bless the men and women serving...not a dry eye in this house...
So if you are all stressed out over what to get this person or that person...please step back a bit and remember our troops...say a prayer for them...
