Jackson Browne's 1978 album "Running on Empty" will be recharged Nov. 15 in an expanded and remastered CD/DVD edition via Rhino. The original 10-track release is augmented with the previously unreleased song "Cocaine Again" and the instrumental overture piece "Edwardsville Room 124," which draws bits from several album songs.

The DVD side boasts the album mixed in DVD-Audio 5.1 Surround Sound, produced by Browne from the original multi-track master recordings. An image gallery of 300 Joel Bernstein photographs from the era is also included, as are liner notes essays from director Cameron Crowe and journalist Anthony DeCurtis.

"Running on Empty" was influenced by life on the road and was alternately recorded at shows or on tour buses and hotel rooms. It spawned such pop hits as the title track (No. 11) and ""The Load-Out"/Stay" (No. 20) and has been certified seven times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for U.S. shipments of seven million copies.

As previously reported, Browne will on Oct. 11 release "Jackson Browne -- Solo Acoustic, Volume 1" on his own label, Inside Recordings. The set culls live material from several recent tours.

Browne Revisits "Running"
Classic 1977 album to get two-disc reissue

Still running

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Jackson Browne's seminal 1977 album, Running on Empty, will be reissued as an expanded and remastered edition on November 15th. The two-disc set features the remastered original album, previously unreleased tracks, a DVD and more than two hundred never-before-seen photos. The record, has sold more than seven million copies to date.

The newly remastered live album, a portrait of life on the road, includes the classic tracks and Top Forty hits "The Load-Out/Stay" and the title song, "Running on Empty." Meanwhile, the DVD features unreleased songs, including the instrumental "Edwardsville Room 124" and "Cocaine Again," as well as a behind-the-scenes photo album from the tour during which Browne wrote and recorded Empty.

Written and produced by Browne, Running on Empty was the singer-songwriter's grand experiment: a live album of all-new songs recorded onstage, in hotel rooms and on the tour bus. The title track was actually written when Browne was driving back and forth to the studio each day to make 1976's The Pretender. "I was always driving around with no gas in the car," he said. "I just never bothered to fill up the tank because -- how far was it anyway? Just a few blocks." Rolling Stone named "Running on Empty," which spent seventeen weeks on the charts, one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Last month, Browne released Solo Acoustic Vol. 1, his first live album since Empty, featuring tender takes on classic songs like "These Days," "Lives in the Balance" and "The Pretender."
