Jimmy Buffetts original/first tour
In 1975 I was leaving Florida for the last time, it was the only time I had been away except to do my service in the Millitary. A couple of friends and myself went to a concert in central Fla (as best I remember) called
the sun fest that Jimmy was the main act. It was a large outdoor weekend extravaganza that had many groups but we were mainly there for Jimmy B. Now years later I am settled in the opisite end of the USA
and I wonder if the sun fest was part of the original tour.
does anyone remember?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "original/first" tour but I seriously doubt it. Buffett's first major label release was A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean which came out in 1973. I'm sure this was accompanied by a tour. If you're alluding to when he started to draw larger sized crowds, I think it would be fair to say that really didn't start happening on a regular basis until sometime in the 80s. I saw him on both the Coconut Telegraph and Hot Water Tours when he was still playing college campuses.cracker wrote:I wonder if the sun fest was part of the original tour.

Wow you people answer quick, I know what you mean when you say we wish we look this good when we are 45. I am 56 and I aint quite as studly as I was 30 years ago.
"Topless" your in Tampa area? When I was on my way out of Fla. for the last time I was living on Santa Maria Island/Bradenton bch. I went to quite a few great concerts in the StPetersburg Tampa area my last year
there. some wernt that big or advertised and some were huge including one at a Tampa Stadium that had ZZ Tops, Savoy Brown, Blue Oyster Cult(I think) Billy Preston (I think) and a bunch of others I cant quite remember.
I miss Florida occasionally but where I am suits me and my family.

They used to have alot of ROCK SUPER BOWL concerts... I recal one year seeing AC/DC, POCO. Boston and The Doobie Brothers at one.... I actually thought SunFest was in 1976 or 1977.... but maybe they had them several years. The one I went to had Jimmy Buffett playing just at sunset... I remember Melanie, Orleans, ARS, Poco... were there too... Its was like a Florida WoodStock.... Very first time I smelled pot!!! LOL

I was there at Northeast Highschool in St Pete and in Gainesville at UF around that time. Wish I'd been to SunFest! Did see Elton John at the Bayfront in St. Pete, as well as a few others there & in Tampa. (Leonard Skynard, Jethro Tull, Seals & Croft, etc)ToplessRideFL wrote:I am ... at that time I was in HS living In Indian Rocks Beach (Pinellas County)cracker wrote:"Topless" you're in Tampa area?

I remember
Damn people you are all making me a bit homesick, I graduated from
Cocoa High in 1968 went in the service and came back to the stpetersburg/ Tampa bay area in 71. I spent 4 years after going to concerts and partying. some of the best concerts I saw were small little advertised ones at small places like the "Homer Hesterly Armory" in Sarasota where I went to two different concerts which less the 500 people showed up to either, one group was Ted Nugent and the amboy dukes and the other was the Beach boys. Now say what you want about the beach boys but they took the fact that hardly anyone turned out and they put on one hell of a show. Topless I do believe 1975 was the date since I left Florida for the last time shortly after, and yes I remember Jimmy came on about sunset and I remember melanie, and poco. and by the way
what you smelled might have been hash and it seems to me I remember being very close to it.

Re: I remember
I lived in Lauderdale in 75... moved here in 76.... maybe alot of acts came back a few years in a row. Melanie actually lives in Tarpon Springs... I have a SunFest shirt.... sun logo on the front and all the groups listed on the back.... But back in the day the lettering and graphics were plastic..... iron on!! Needless to say the shirt is about all peeled off! And btw... it was pot... a older brother of my date pulled it out of his tube socks!! (it was wrapped in tin foil...)cracker wrote: Topless I do believe 1975 was the date since I left Florida for the last time shortly after, and yes I remember Jimmy came on about sunset and I remember melanie, and poco. and by the way

Re: Jimmy Buffetts original/first tour
Poplar Creek in Chicago was 30-40,000 and he played Thurday, Friday Saturday beginning in 79. I would get one night pavillion for a date and the other two lawn with drinking buddies. He started selling big venues earlier than the mid-80'sJahfin wrote:I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "original/first" tour but I seriously doubt it. Maggie, I havent really entertained returning to Fla., but in a few years when my wife and I retire I might talk her into seeing the home of my wicked youth (newly weds and nearlydeads). we will be finishing puting our second daughter and our first son thru college soon and mabe by retirment age we will refill the bankaccount enough to travel.
Topless: I am sure it was pot (as you said), a friend of mine took a lb of hash to that concert and there was so much dope already there he couldnt hardly give any away (let alone sell it) and it was pretty nice as I remember.
By the way does anyone remember Leon Russell at a big open air Tampa stadium around 74,75,? He put on a hell of a show.
