Today was a good day. I talked to BG on the phone last night, and she brought up some of the same things. I never realized that smoking was such an emotional crutch for my mom, or even really what that meant until now. I also didn't realize that my controlling attitude was only making things worse.
So the first thing this morning, I told her that I will love her no matter what she decides or what happens as a result. I also told her that her grandkids love her, and I want her to live to know her great-grandkids too.
She had an appointment with her ENT specialist this morning, and I gently broached the subject with him at the end. To my surprise, he took the same approach as you - he understood her need, but also warned her that smoking could bring back the cancer in an uncurable form.
I really think she is taking it to heart now, and has the desire to quit. I'm still going home on Sunday, but with hope for the future and a renewed relationship with my mom. I owe much of that to you all - thanks for being here for me when I was down...

Sounds like a step in the right direction. I'm glad that you feel a bit more at ease and I hope that your mom can kick this habit. It's tough. I still struggle with it everyday. But your mom knowing that you her family is there to support her and that you love her will help.
Have a safe trip home Sunday....

oh, Bill . .this is soooo good to hear . . .
I'm certain your positive, loving approach made a world of difference toward her outlook on things . .
knowing she has your support and understanding , will make it much easier for her to approach these important changes . . and without that little white crutch . . .
Mom knows you love her . . . unconditionally . .
I think you'll see how important that is toward what happens next . . .
give her a hug from all of us . . .and don't forget to tell her she has many, many new friends here. . .
now, it sounds like it's time to get home to your babies. . . ! !

Mom had her LAST radiation treatment today, and should just have one more chemo treatment on Monday. They increased the radiation intensity again on Tuesday, and she is feeling it. Even with the radiation being over, they say she'll probably get a little worse before she starts getting better.
She says she hasn't smoked, and I hope that's true...

Thanks for the update. It's a long road, but it sounds like you're both hanging in there...just keep taking it a step at a time. (((Four Play and mom)))

No chemo today, so the treatments are over. Now her body just needs time to heal. They say the tube will be in for at least another month or two.
I think she is really serious about wanting to quit. Whenever she gets the urge, she gets a big kitchen match instead of a cigarette. If the urge gets really bad, she'll light the match and watch it burn. She came up with the idea on her own, and so far it's been working for her - I hope it lasts...

Thanks for the update, Bill. I'm glad she is motivated. Maybe the new baby is added incentive.
Continued prayers to her and to your whole family.

Hang in there. It'll be tuff, but you may need to be tuff for her and sometimes on her. God knows we have had to ride my Dad at times to get him to follow Doctors orders, like hijacking his car in November. But ya gotta. Take care.

Mom had her first post-treatment appointment with her oral surgeon today (he's the one who diagnosed her).
He assured her that the bad tissue is gone, so now the good tissue just needs more time to heal.
She still has a ways to go, but this is definitely a milestone!
