Cuervo 1800 Question
OK, Here is a question which can most likely only be answered by a BN'er. We were partaking last night and someone commented on why the stopper on a bottle of 1800 is empty and has a hole in it. One person said that it migtht be to use as a built in shot glass but as soon as you trun the bottle over it all runs back in the bottle. I said that it was to keep the cost down as a solid stopper would be more costly. But then why the hole in it? This question can probably only be answered by a distributor or as I said a fellow BN'er who also ponders the eternal questions which trouble our minds.
Either way I think we will have to do some more research tonight.
Thanks,
Thanks,

Re: Cuervo 1800 Question
I have used it that way for years. Sam you may remember me doing it at the Mark Mulligan show. It's VERY simple to get the top off without spilling it but it does take a little practice!Sam wrote:It is a shot glass!!! I had a bartender told me it was I never had noticed it before....... Thanks,
The mechanics are this. Turn it upside down, let it fill, slowly turn it back to the side taking the top out at the same time and at the moment the top begins to break away continue to turning the bottle to the correct position with the top upside down. If that made sense, great, if not, not sure how to exlpain it but I could show ya.

Actually it is a quad-purpose bottle cap. The bartender myth that it was designed to be used as a shot glass, and the fact that it does contain a 1 1/2 oz shot of tequila is purely coincidence. However, so many people have attempted to master the upside down flip it back over and get the top off before the tequila runs back into the bottle, and then manage not to spill it all over trick, the shot glass purpose stands.
1. Shot Glass.
Now to state the obvious:
2. A bottle Cap
The following is the primary purpose.
3. Aeration
Most Tequila experts suggest that all quality tequila needs to be aerated, much like letting a fine wine breathe. Decanting tequila is a time honored tradition in the Jalisco and Tequila region of Mexico. Many distillers have worked an aeration system right into their bottle. Don Julio use to have a plastic aeration insert that was manufactured into the poor spout of their bottles. Milagro Reserve hand blown bottle has a three holed aeration system blown into the long neck of the bottle. The long neck of the Corazon Tequila bottle acts as their aeration system. There are many many other examples of this among fine tequilas. {Don't get me wrong, I do not DO NOT consider 1800 to be a fine Tequila by any means, yet cuervo likes to act like it is.} There are about 6 Tequila distillers that also follow the Cuervo 1800 example of building the aeration system into the bottle cap. By turning the bottle upside down and allowing the tequila to flow through the narrow opening into the cap, and then back into the bottle effectively aerates the tequila.
4. Salt and Pepper Shakers
a bartender that worked for me used a plastic filtered liquor bottle poor spout and fashioned it so it would fit snuggly into to the opening of the 1800 bottle top, filled em with salt and pepper, and used em as shakers.
On a side note, Jose Cuervo could no longer keep the 1800 line competitive and still claim that it is 100% agave. There are strict rules that all Tequila companies must adhere to, restricting the amount of blending - if any - can occur based on labeling. The Cuervo Especial product for instance is blended with a caramel based liquor to give it it's gold color. Tequila may be blended based on labeling, but can't claim to be 100% de agave. Some of you may have noticed over the last few years, that the made from "100% blue agave" on the label has been replaced by "100 de agave". This was a change in the tequila laws made in 1999 to help keep distillers in business. The blue agave plant/cactus is in very short supply and it takes 10 years for a single plant to produce a pina also known as a corazon or heart which is used to make tequila. Other Agave cactus have a much shorter growing time but produce a significantly smaller pina. The Mexican government made an exception to allow the use of other agave species to be used in tequila so long as the plants are grown within the historic tequila region.
Mezcals are not tequila, but the quality is getting better and better. Typically Mezcals are a blend of liquor derived from the Mezcal cactus and Agave cactus grown outside the tequila region of Mexico. Often these mezcals are blended with a variety of other flavored liquers.
