Sometimes, in specific industries, people know people and your boss may be passing it on knowing full-well that some people may be looking for a change. People do that here all the time. Granted, all that advice is assuming you don't have a coniving boss who might have made up this "opening" and set up a fake e-mail address to see how many people on his team want to leave.
It's actually a string of e-mails that didn't originate from my boss. She simply forwarded the other information from a different group that knows the type of work we do.

This was the e-mail sent to our team:
FYI -- If you know of anyone looking for a technical writing job, please pass this on. Otherwise, please delete the message.

Reserach the company and confirm the opening. What's it going to cost you, a long distance call and 15 minutes on a computer? That's nothing.buffettbride wrote:Ish. Well exactly! Boss lady is no dummy, and I've known her for years. She's definitely not out to get anyone and always promotes our personal growth in addition to our professional growth. I feel confident her intentions are good, even knowing some of her own team members might consider a position like that.mings wrote:Sometimes, in specific industries, people know people and your boss may be passing it on knowing full-well that some people may be looking for a change. Justifiably so, some people on here are very cautious about things like this. That's a good way to be, until it turns into fear. There are some bosses who veiw their jobs as just that, jobs. They value the people with whom they work more than the company for whom they work. My boss is one of them. It's not 1940 anymore. People don't start and end their careers with the same company. Good bosses know this, and a disgruntled employee is no good to anyone.buffettbride wrote:Well exactly! Boss lady is no dummy, and I've known her for years. "Do you "know" anyone who might be interested?" is standard headhunter/recruiter language.
Trust your intuition. Taking a look into it (as long as you don't do it overtly on company time) shouldn't cause any harm.

Actually, Monster.com used to have things like that on their resource page.

Too bad I have to wait until I'm home to research all of this!! Looking for other jobs on company time is worse than the time I spend on BN!

I'll be a drug dealer in VT... well 4 months out of the year. I can't do the snow. Oh yeah, and it has to be homeopathic drugs since I don't have any training with the legal kind.ToplessRideFL wrote:BINGO.... I do it daily! Lateral moves are kinda the norm in my world. There's very few levels of technical writing. It's either entry-level, professional, or senior (or things along those lines). I probably fall in the mid-range of professional (where most people probably are with this type of job). If I were to take it on, I'd make sure in the number crunching that it worked out in our favor--and not just geographically.ToplessRideFL wrote:The one I posted above is in my experience the most accurate.... Also beside COL... dont forget to add in at least a 6-10% increase...... for you making the move....rarely is a latteral move smart
Edit: It's also a field that is somewhat tool-dependant, meaning a specific skill with a specific tool or software is what often times makes or breaks a job opportunity.
