Weird job thing...*advice please*

So I get an e-mail forwarded to my team from my boss about another company looking to hire people in my profession (Technical Writing). This job, with multiple openings, is in Honolulu, Hawaii. OMG!!!

I have been searching, off and on, for a new job. Nothing desperate, just looking at my options. Unfortunately, the market in Denver is pretty stagnant, and unless you know people it is very challenging to get a job by blindly applying. I also haven't put a lot of effort into networking, which is a virtual MUST for making yourself known for hirers.

This opening, though, piqued my interest. I'm not sure I'd be ready (or the family would be ready) for a full-on move to Hawaii, but I am completely capable of telecommuting and travelling on an as-needed basis for this type of job, and would definitely consider a permanent move if it was the right fit.

I'm scared to death to even pursue it, considering the information was forwarded to my team and me from our boss and the idea of taking a huge risk like this is a bit daunting. I've been at my current place of employment almost 5 years (the longest job for me) and am very comfortable here--although there's a list of reasons why I wouldn't have a problem leaving.

What would you do???

First things first..... I do not understand WHY your boss would send this to you.....

I think the first thing I'd do is wonder why the heck my boss is sending me emails on other job openings; sounds like a bad omen to me!

I would look into it, ya never know.

At the very least maybe they'll fly you out for an interview.

I don't either, other than she's really cool and would want us to pass it on to others we may know in the field. She also probably wouldn't be distraught if any of her employees really wanted to move to Hawaii. :D I work for a HUGE company, and we are all very expendable, something we've learned from almost 5 continuous years of layoffs. It's generally pretty easy to backfill positions on my team.

I didn't realize Denver had such a large Greek population.

Discounting the peculiarity of the notice coming from your boss, I'd at least check it out. Can't see much downside and the upside could at least be a little Hawaiian vacation.

Haha!! I thought of that, too! Hmmm. Hawaii. Pennsylvania. Hawaii. Pennsylvania. Although if I could telecommute, PA might not be out of the picture either.

Yup, reminds me of "The Office" last night. The boss was begging someone to take another job because then he wouldn't have to figure out who to lay off.

As for what I'd do. I'd talk to my fiancee and then send in my resume. Either you don't get the job and you don't have to worry about it. Or they make you an offer and you get a free trip to Hawaii to "think it over". You can always state on the application that you would prefer them not to contact your current employer.

Granted, all that advice is assuming you don't have a coniving boss who might have made up this "opening" and set up a fake e-mail address to see how many people on his team want to leave. :o

If it had just been sent to me and not my entire team, I might be worried, but because it went to everyone, I think she was just trying to be helpful. As said before, she's REALLY cool and wouldn't have a problem with losing someone for a good opportunity.

And she sent it on company email??? Oh boy.... an HR nightmare.....

that said...

It is suggested that every 3-5 years you look around in your field... update your resume and even go on an interview... It will do one of 2 things... Keep you secure that you are happy in your current position... or make you realize there is a WHOLE world out there just waiting for you.... and it pays more!

Go for it Mal.... just apply and see what happens... but dont tell your boss...no matter how cool she is!

Oh great. A whole new level of paranoia I didn't consider!

It's actually a string of e-mails that didn't originate from my boss. She simply forwarded the other information from a different group that knows the type of work we do.

NEVER. Don't do it.

Go for the job. That way we'll all have someone to visit. Plus, (and on a more realistic note) it's always better to look back on your life and think about the things you learned and the memories created about doing something (whether it worked out or not) rather than wonder what could have been. No one can blame you for following your dreams. I'm sure your children would learn a valuable lesson from this down the road, "Always take advantage of Every opportunity, because you never know where it will lead."

Good luck, and Polly's right, maybe at least you'll get an interview out of it, and a trip to HI. Plus you don't want to end up on the thread about missing out on things in life....

I didn't even think about that. That could be a fun one to explain to the folks upstairs.

Go for it!! I worked as a project manager for a large software company in Denver - applied for better position - had to have boss sign off on paperwork. Decided not to take it and stayed in same position; boss didn't say a word.

The e-mail was worded in such a way that it implied for us to forward the information to anyone we *knew* who might be interested in such an opportunity--not if we were interested in it ourselves. She's definitely no dummy, although I do think there could be serious HR issues if someone wanted to make it so. Also, the hiring company is not one of our competitors. It it were, I'm sure it never would have made it this far.

I'm already working on the pro/con list.

Con:
I'd be even more time-zone challenged from my BN friends.

Pro:
It's Hawaii for heaven's sake!!
