mings, the true solution is self-employment. Most of the coaches who work in the school's i'm at if they don't teach have their own businesses. This gives them some scheduling flexibility and usually the income to be able to take time off.
I'm glad you can do it at least pt at the hs level. Doing something with your passions esp. passing your dreams onto kids and mentoring them is great for your self and it keeps you young. The kids never forget their coaches either and in the long run that matters.

I always wanted to be Dave Barry or a stand-up comedian.
But I think that ship has sailed.
I don't have the discipline to write regularly.
According to my kids (dang 20-somethings), I'm not all that funny (unless looks count).
And I'm not all that fond of standing up.
I shoulda been a cowboy.

You're so very right OCG. One friend has his own insurance agency & financial services company. Another buys, rebuilds or rehabs, and flips houses in Avalon. A third owns an appliance store. A 4th is a lawyer with his own practice.

There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a kid "get it". Whether its on the medals dock or after suffering a horrible loss, that's the best part. Although I can do without the losses, but then again - they just may not get it.

Then in hs one wrestled and played football while the other ran all three seasons. One took it on to the college the other will be helping his hs coach while he's in community college. It gave them discipline. Neither would have gone to college without it.
By the way they both rowed too. Our hs didn't start a team until their jr year though. The one is a beach lifeguard so he rows the lifeguard boats competitively in the summer.
Since both of their sports are individual types it is awful when they lose.

i'm actually quite familiar with the OC crew program as they are rowing 3 boats that I spent countless man hours keeping afloat. The Rev. Herbert Keller, The Pamela Thistle (I think) and I forget the 3rd (if there was one). Good shells, those boats were. Anyway, I remember when the program started, and truthfully, I'm impressed with the dedication that they've shown to improving the program. It's always tough for a new program to maintain its focus and base, and they've seemed to do well so far. Unfortunately for them, they are also in one of the most competitive leagues for HS rowing in the country, if not THE MOST competitive. I always admire the shore schools and how they do so well, while rowing in the bay, and traveling to every single race. It's amazing how much that drains a team.

See that's what I love about tennis: it's all about you. You can't blame the defense after a loss, or ask 'how did the goalie let one in 5-hole?' or be taken out with the game on the line. It's all you out there. You're the one making the pressure serve or hitting the pressure shots. Now when you make the shots and win, you get one hell of a high, but when you lose, man does it s***. You control your own destiny.

Believe it or not, it's similar in rowing. I know, how can 8 guys be equal to one. Well, unlike football, baseball, lacrosse, or whatever other sport, all 8 guys are doing the same thing. Essentially, it's one person moving the boat to the finish line as fast as possible. And man, does losing hurt.

It was always amazing to me that OC didn't have a team before. The other local schools are generally envious of our situation. Mainland, Holy Spirit, and others have to travel to Brigantine and Ventnor to row. I lived on the Egg Harbor River and we our neighbors let EHT practice off their docks but cranky folks complained about the noise at 6am.
My sons rowed for both Viking and the Greenheads from the time they were small. OC was eternally greatful to the folks who helped them obtain their first boats. It wouldn't have been possible without donations, loaners and big discounts. Since the school made them start out as a club they didn't get the funding they needed.
I believe my sons left hockey because they preferred individual sports. In both wrestling and cross country you get varsity because you are the fastes/best. Not because the coach likes you or your family is important, etc. And at any time anybody can challenge you. I have alot of respect for my sons. I think they were two of the toughest sports i've seen. I'd also include crew with that. I dated a college rower all thru college. My dd's college roomate is a coxsain. I don't love getting up at 4am.

I've always had tons of respect for athletes who participate in non-team sports (like your sons), and even rowers who row singles. In a way, there is no team. Everything depends on you, and for a young athlete, that is a huge burden to be placed on a kid. Wrestling and Xcountry are no jokes. Not only are they physically abusive, but, they can be very lonely sports. Your right, you learn more than you'll ever know by participating in such sports. That's exactly the point - in the end to help the kids realize just exactly why I'm up at unGodly hours, and at the boathouse late. Because, if they pay attention and give it half of what the coaches do, then they'll be better men for that.

And that is not the only story I have heard. I also know and interior designer, a house painter, and an esthician(sp) that have all said they know a million people with the same problem.
