What's the difference between milkshakes, malts, and ice cream sodas? Just curious.

Also which one do you like best

A milkshake is basically smoothy ice cream. A malt has malt flavoring added to it.. An ice cream soda is a shake with some sort of soda added.

And I like malts. :)

milshakes are made with just milk and ice cream

malts have milk, ice cream and malt mix (powder)

i think a soda is the same thing as a float and has ice cream and your favorite soda like rootbeer... :D

The ice cream sodas I always got had vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup and carbonated water in them. I still love them although they are tough to find. Don't ask the teenager at Baskin Robbins to make you one. :-?

Floats were made with ice cream and your favorite soda...like rootbeer, coke etc.

Has anyone ever had a Phosphate soda? :) It's an old thing.. ususally served at a 'soda fountain'. And it's made by blending carbonated water with flavored syrup.

Not just Malt flavoring, a Malt must have dehydrated malted Barley syrup (powdered) mixed in. If it is artificial flavor, it's just a flavored shake. There is indeed a chemical reaction that occurs between the lactose in the milk and the malted barley powder.

Malted Barley powders are also used in making Beer. For a matter of trivial fact, the use of Malt Powders in Ice Cream Drinks and hot breakfast cereals it what saved Budweiser during prohibition. They needed to do something with all that malt. The production of powdered malted barely for use in desserts and in Warm breakfast cereals like malted cream of wheat and oatmeal became most breweries # 1 product and the production of brewers yeast used for baking was #2.

Of the options, I vote for a malt...

However, can't go wrong with a root beer float, or a dreamsicle (vanilla ice cream with orange pop)... yummmm!!
