Barometer Soup question

Post by Lono »

I know what a barameter is. I know what soup is. Why does he say Barometer is my soup? I really like the song, not to mention the album. Someone asked me what it meant, and I didn't have a real good answer.

Barometer Soup

1 mango (diced)
1 cup oil
1 lb backfin crab meat
16 ounces dried split peas
1 green pepper
1 red pepper
1 yellow pepper
2 plantains
1 cup crab base
1 gallon water
1/2 cup caribbean jerk seasoning
1 red onion (Bermuda)
cornstarch, to thicken (about 1 cup diluted in water)

1 hour 30 minutes

Dice all vegetables & fruits.
In a large pot, saute vegetables in 1 cup oil.
Add remaining ingredients, bring to a boil and reduce heat to a simmer.
Simmer about 1.5 hours.
Thicken with cornstarch diluted in water to the consistency you like.
[The recipe is for a party sized pot (serves about 12-16)].

Wow. Thanks for the quick reply. When I read the lyrics, it said "Barometer is my soup." Never thought about it being an actual soup.

I did think metaphor. That was my problem. I never thought it about it being an actual soup (I realize it can be both). That was my original question, what is the metaphor?

From CoBO's literary references: "The term Barometer Soup was first mentioned to Jimmy by Herman Wouk."

Actually, that is helpful. Of course, now I have to go read everything written by Hermann Wouk to figure it out.

Funny you should mention that. I just read the first 50 pages of Don't Stop the Carnival. I may not get my answer, but I will enjoy searching for it. A lot of fun so far.

I made the soup this weekend for my Live at Fenway DVD party. It was a BIG hit...weird ingredients, but it was good...hardly tasted the jerk sauce diluted in the gallon of water.

Lono, you may want to read this one...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/019510 ... 5&v=glance

Check out some of the reviews.

You can read it online and see all the illustrations!

This is the chapter that includes Barometer Soup.

http://www.gutenberg.org/dirs/1/1/119/119-h/p6.htm#ch38

Then maybe you can draw your own conclusions as to what Jimmy meant by JUST for STARTERS...Barometer's my soup.

Next?

He says join me for lunch at the reptile's brunch

Maybe this quote may help too.

We watched the weather all through that awful night, and kept an eye on the barometer, to be prepared for the least change. There was not the slightest change recorded by the instrument, during the whole time. Words cannot describe the comfort that that friendly, hopeful, steadfast thing was to me in that season of trouble. It was a defective barometer, and had no hand but the stationary brass pointer, but I did not know that until afterward. If I should be in such a situation again, I should not wish for any barometer but that one.

If you think that the barometer is accurately telling you to go ahead, that it is smooth sailing ahead, maybe you'll go out and have a fine adventure, even if it isn't all smooth sailing.

nope!! I find it highly entertaining to read Wouk and Twain and appreciate the things Jimmy has inspired me to read about.

I might never have read A Tramp Abroad.

Dear Conched,

Well done. If I am ever on the show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?", I definitely want your number. I like your theory. Here is a Mark Twain quote for you - "All you need is ignorance and confidence; then success is sure." I am tempted to start a separate thread on this, but I would like to know your favorite Mark Twain quote.
