What a Bummer!

Post by Delta Parrot »

DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HAVE READ ASPOL WILL GIVE AWAY INFO!

I just finshed ASPOL and could not be more bummed. Tully Mars has been one of my favorite charcaters for several years, drifting from ne dventure to another. I stopped reading the book a few months ago and finally picked it up to finish. Tully our great peter pan has a wife and kids and works in a boat yard???Just not the ending I was hoping for, wish I had left the book alone after they found the lens.

You're not alone. Almost everyone I know who read ASPOL has been pretty let down by the ending. Me included. But it's a great ride getting there!!!

I enjoyed reading the whole book, but I was a little disappointed about how the book ended also.

Let's face it. The book stinks. If it wasn't written by JB, it would have never made the Best Seller list.

My wife is a Parrot Head and an AVID reader, its not uncommon for her to read 2-3 books a week if she has time..... she started ASPOL and after a couple chapters put it away.

I said this when the book came out, that it was a big let down from Where is Joe Merchant? which I thought was excellent. Or Tales From Margaritaville for that matter

Well, I don't feel so bad now about reading a little of it and putting it away. I love to read and the only reason I bought the book was because JB wrote it but I just couldn't get into it.

It was kinda hard to get into, but once it started rolling, I enjoyed it. I really enjoy how JB throws in song titles or parts of song verses into the story. Yeah, the end was not what I would have hoped for, but hey, Tully ends up pretty well off and happy, so good for him! Who knows, maybe aliens will abduct Tully's new wife and kids and he and Desdemona will have to rescue them!

I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now!

I enjoyed the book too. I say Tully's settling down as being symbolic of a lot of us. Let's face it - a lot of us aren't the "party animals" we once were. Even Jimmy has settled down compared to the Jimmy of the 70's. It's part of life - the majority of people eventually take on more adult responsibilities. It's a part of growing older. The tailgates are evident of us not growing up. :D

Hey I 'm not telling anyone not to read it, I'm just saying it wasn't up to the lofty standards, in my opinion he set with his first two works. Anytime someone writes prose or poetry or music, they are baring their souls for anyone to critique. Not an easy thing to do. If it was everyone would do it. By all means read it and judge for yourselves.

I agree with this. I think that the ending was pretty good. I didn't feel let down because Tully has had some good adventures, and he wanted a change. :pirate:

I thought the book was an average book. It took awhile to warm up. I did love the middle of the book. The ending was a little let down for me just because that was not what I was hoping fo at the ending.
I agree with ph4ever and fins2rt that it was symbolic ending. For me it was about changes we make through out our lives.

It Was a Good Read!

Post by moondoggie »

I too am an avid reader--several books a week and I work full-time.

I enjoyed ASPOL for the ride--the storyline is OK, but the images and descriptions were pretty good. Not something I would recommend to my Book Club, but a good use of my reading time. Not all books are monumental, but it's real easy to put a book down and choose another to occupy one's time.

I LOVED the references to song lyrics, and tried to spot them all--part of the fun being a Parrothead who reads!

I don't read very many books, too much technical reading and procedures at work, but I throughtly enjoyed it from cover to cover. Having followed Buffett from the early seventies, I had the oldest tickets on Buffettstubs.com by far for a long time, I loved the names and lyrics woven thru-out it and sun & drink in hand relived a lot of my island memories and dreams this spring. :pirate:
