1. hot stove league (n)
the baseball talk among fans and sports media during the off-season.
SYNONYMS: (hot-stove league)
Ok - so I still don't get why the off-season is called the Hot Stove league, and I'm no dummy to sports. I've just never heard it before and frankly it doesn't make much sense to me.

Essentially, in the old days, when Baseball was the dominant sport (primarily the Great Depression Era, also know as Larry's teenage years), the offseason was just as exciting as the regular season. People would gather around their Hot Stoves, listen to their radio for news of trades, etc., and discuss them.

it was less money according to the radio reports out here.......hometown discount 5 years 60mil......the orioles offered 5 years 65mil!!
This will probably p*** off the O's fans because the S.F.B. owner of the O's will now say he tried but the free agents went elsewhere when the O's tank this coming year.

In this case, it's actually true!

Newest Mike Piazza rumor in now that he will go to the Angels instead of the Twins. The Angels would then let Bengie Molina go....and he'd likely sign with the Mets!

Speaking of the Mets, they are close to signing Mark Grudzielanek.

The Angels would still need a catcher, Piazza can't play every day anymore.

MANNY RAMIREZ TRADED TO DEVIL RAYS!!!!!
Just kidding.

Of all the Manny rumors the Abreu one got me pretty excited. I mean I would love Manny to stay ( I even signed that crazy online petition going around...
www.keepmanny.com) but if he is going to go I would love a player like Abreu.
The other crazy rumor I saw on Sons of Sam Horn was Ichiro for Manny. I know its a shot in the dark rumor but I've heard Ichiro is upset in Seattle and Manny has said he wants to go to Seattle. It will never happen but the picture in my head of Ichiro in a Sox uniform gives me goosebumps.
By the way, for any Cubs fans... how is this Van Buren guy the Sox traded for?? He was the Cubs triple A player of the year so I am guessing he has some major potential.

He's your future closer.....averaged close to 11 K/9 at AAA. I have no clue why the Cubs would trade him for nothing.

I thought that guy from St. John's (Hansen, I think) who they just drafted in the first round this year was Boston's future closer.
