By the way, for any Cubs fans... how is this Van Buren guy the Sox traded for?? He was the Cubs triple A player of the year so I am guessing he has some major potential.
He's your future closer.....averaged close to 11 K/9 at AAA. I have no clue why the Cubs would trade him for nothing.
I thought that guy from St. John's (Hansen, I think) who they just drafted in the first round this year was Boston's future closer.
Maybe they both are. Most closers only last an average of 2 years in the role anyway.

Phillies
I also heard the Yankees in their epic (as in long) quest for a CF, and the Marlins in their firesale, are trying to work a deal in which Juan Pierre goes to the Yankees and the Marlins want RP Scott Procter and SP Sean Henn goes to the Marlins. No Robbie Cano, no Chien-Ming Wang.

I attended a Q & A last night for season ticket holders at Petco Park with Padres GM Kevin Towers and President Sandy Alderson.
* The Wells deal was mentioned, possibly to include Sean Burroughs with as many as 6 people.
* A very strong hint of a catcher free agent signing (methings Benji Molina)
* Also a mention of another SP in a deal....no names. Aki for Benson would fit the bill.
* Both said that #1 top priority now is Trevor Hoffman.
It was a very interesting night. Free consession food, media guides, nice access to players/management and a fireworks show.

And all those years I thought that the Red Sox were "Cursed".
Turns out they just have their priorities wrong.
The Boston Red Sox have filed a lawsuit against former first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz, who currently has the baseball from the last out of their World Series win in 2004. The Red Sox claim that the ball is theirs.
So...the Red Sox biggest priority this off-season is to get a souvenir????
SHOULDN'T THEY BE, maybe, I don't know, HIRING A GENERAL MANAGER????
At least we've figured out who is running the team:

Have you seen my baseball?

Must be nice to have money to throw away....
Report: Yankees lost $50 to $85 million for 2005 season
ESPN.com news services
The New York Yankees lost between $50 million and $85 million for the 2005 season, the New York Daily News reported Sunday.
Despite drawing more than four million fans, a payroll of $200 million plus an additional $110 million in revenue sharing and luxury taxes has left the Yankees in the red, according to the paper.
"Yes, even George has his limits," one source told the Daily News.
The paper also reports that the Yankees might have to open up their checkbooks even further if a consultant hired by MLB decides the team undervalued their television rights.
The Yankees currently charge the YES Network about $60 million a year to broadcast games, but if it's found to be undervalued, the Yankees will have to make up the difference put more money into the revenue-sharing fund, the paper reported.
"They're going to owe us money," one MLB source predicted to the paper.
The final numbers won't be crunched for a few months, but it's believed the final number will be roughly $80 million when all is tallied. According to Forbes magazine, the Yankees lost $37.1 million in 2004.

Sosa promises a `surprise' signing
CBSSportsLine.com
Published December 5, 2005
Sammy Sosa says he's talking with several teams interested in signing him. Sosa declined to identify the teams but said he would make an announcement after the winter meetings. "We're negotiating with several teams," Sosa said in comments published Sunday in the newspaper HOY in his native Dominican Republic. "We're going to make it a surprise." Some have speculated that Sosa could join the Mets, whose general manager, Omar Minaya, signed Sosa to his first contract in the 1980s when Minaya was a scout for the Rangers. "Sammy only needs an opportunity to play and show that he's recovered" from injuries that hindered him last season, Minaya was quoted as saying in El Nacional, another Dominican daily. "I'm at peace because I trust in what I've done in the past," HOY quoted Sosa as saying.
"I'm Sammy Sosa, and everyone remembers it."
Which part would that be, remember the 'roids, the cork, the quitting on your team.......a$$bag

Once again you have the facts wrong. The Red Sox have possesion of the baseball not Mientkiewicz. Doug Mientkiewicz wants the ball back and the Red Sox have offered to buy it from him but they have not been able to agree on a deal. The Red Sox filed suit asking the court to take possession of the ball until the case is resolved.
So far the GM-less Red Sox have done pretty well so your attempt at making a joke has fallen flat!
