Yes cool to hear that! 8) It was the version from his "You Had To Be There" album! :D
(btw... he performed GOD at Sag Harbor, Long Island in '99 ... so I guess he has smoothed things over with Lord Buckley's progeny.)

He was only not allowed to play it while the lawsuit was still pending.

I didn't know there was a lawsuit. I just assumed he didn't play it because it is so long....
Info on the lawsuit would be appreciated.

From CoBO:

What's the deal with "God's Own Drunk?"

Lord Richard Buckley was the original author of "God's Own Drunk." Lord Buckley's son who managed the estate after Lord Buckley died sued Buffett over the use of "God's Own Drunk" claiming that Buffett had not paid for the rights and even more, had recorded a perverse version of God's Own Drunk. They got an injunction against Buffett which prevented him from performing the song until the lawsuit was settled or resolved. So, in 1986 when Buffett would get to the part of his show where he would normally perform "God's Own Drunk," he would say that he still isn't allowed to play it because of the lawsuit and instead played a song he wrote called "The Lawyer and the a**hole" in which he accuses Buckley's son and lawyers as being greedy and tells them to kiss his ass. You can download the entire song From The Vault. Thanks to Scott Henderson for the quick synopsis

As an experinced Buffett fan, I, too, am not impressed with God's Own Drunk. It's less a song than a story--and a fun one at that. But I fast forward the cassette when it comes on.

Yes, the cassette. ;)

I remember back in the late 80's, Jimmy did the Lawyer and the A**Hole. He then said **** it and played "Gods own Drunk". It was at the old Sunrise Musical Theater in Ft Lauderdale. To my knowledge that was last time he played it.

The recorded version is OK but his live renditions are awesome and make them classics. If the RM version was recorded then go get "You had to be there" and listen the concert version.

I don't know the last time it was played in concert, but I know he played it some back in early to mid 90's. Can't remember what tour, but it was played at a Raleigh show around '94 or '95.

I know he played it at least once in Atlanta back on July 5, 1997. Stumpo El Bando... It was raining and we slid on plastic bags down the hill on the lawn there. Very wild night... I'll never remember it all or forget what I do. ;)

Essential Buffett....both the live and studio versions. It may also be a dividing point where fans of his earlier, more songwriting driven stuff part ways with fans of his lighter, more island style fluff...

There is no older more songwriting based fan of Buffetts than me. I was attracted to his writing and music because of the lifestyle I already lived in the early 70's. But what is the appeal of God's own Drunk? Maybe it's because I was familar with Lork Buckley before Buffet covered the "song", but I don't get the appeal of it, though I find Buckley a hoot. And the song divides nothing as far as I can see other than being on a great album, maybe the best live album ever.
