Live at Fenway Park

picked up my copy of LAF yesterday at FYE (thanks posters for the tip) and proceeded to drop it into the CD player and seek a new latitude. Unfortunately, the music is very disappointing......(I never thought I would say this after almost 16 years of worshipping the man). While I realize there was a lot of emotion in the park, Jimmy's voice is often distant and weak. I realize a man of his age has moments, but I'm afraid this is his worst live offering to date.

Of course, if you were lucky enough to be at Fenway for one of the shows, then I strongly suggest you pick this up as a souvenir. However, I would suggest rearranging your iPod Buffett selections to get a different approach rather than buy this.

As usual, the songs selections are the same ol' standbys with only a couple of new ones. Didn't expect a new playlist, but to put this out with every single live song previously recorded on there is beginning to smell like greed.

Haven't seen the DVD yet, waiting for flight to leave and watch on laptop, but it pains me to no end to be disappointed with Jimmy on this....

Listen for yourself........

Well, it is off the board with no mastering or mixing in the studio. But I agree on the value part. I am dangerously collecting the recordings as if they were bottlecaps. I would have balked above $15.00. Any higher, I would use the recording off Radio Marg. (Who the f am I kidding. I would have picked it up at 20.00)

i haven't gotten my copy yet but i too was wondering about the sound quality. i have live at mansfield from a few years back and i was extremely disappointed with the quality. it has all the problems that you mentioned. jimmy's voice doesn't sound as strong. who knows if it's from not standing close enough to the mic or his voice is tired but whatever the reason they should try to address it. T,T&S was an excellent recording.

it's a shame because the show that we saw (1st night) at fenway, the man was sooo into it. you could tell he was really fired up!! i was hoping that would come across on the recording. oh course i'm still going to buy the thing.

Greed? I think not. More or less a common trend in the industry. Pearl Jam has done, The Dead, The Allman Brothers, etc.

I thought I joined the Parrothead way too late in 1991. I remember that Outpost Tour show in Mansfield like it was yesterday. I have attended 50+ shows since (some better than others) and I have appreciated everyone of JB's efforts.

Another CD comes out, I am buying it. Plus, LAF is our first chance to get some of the live License to Chill stuff.

Plus, I was at Fenway both nights :D

Overall, I'm very impressed. I dunno what you're talking about "greed". Jimmy has said in the past that there are a handful of songs that he has to play (or get killed) that are of course on here, but there are songs on this CD that have never appeared on any of his other live albums (i.e. Cuban Crime Of Passion, Piece Of Work, Coast Of Carolina, Sweet Caroline, and the list goes on...). I love it!!!

I like what I have heard so far, and the DVD was really good too. After listening to the Tiki Time tour cds over and over, its kind of refreshing to get the live songs from the License to Chill tour. Piece of Work, Scarlet Begonias, Coast of Carolina, not to mention it was nice to also have some songs on there that are a little older but havent been included on the other live cds. A welcome addition to my collection.

I also noticed the poor sound reproduction

I also noticed the voice reproduction to be of either poor quality, mixing, engineering, I'm no expert, but jimmys voice sounded weak and distant. The DVD isn't 5.1 sound, dolby etc. It's sort of like a budget production[/b]

Well, I'm pretty happy with it, although it was a gift so I didn't pay for it. Sam's Club had it pretty cheap I believe, and since it includes a 55 min DVD I think it's worth the $$. However, I was a little disappointed that he flubbed the lyrics to "Gypsies In The Palace" and "Cuban Crime of Passion". I'm guessing those are the "Senior Moments" mentioned in the disclaimer printed on the back of the cover. But then again, he messed up on "Cheeseburger" back on Feeding Frenzy too so I suppose I shouldn't complain that much. All in all, it's what I expected, and I've enjoyed it.

I too was not impressed with the DVD. The best part of it was the tailgate photo ops which brings back fond memories of other parties. My brother gave me his copy and said dont worry he'll get another copy. Upon which he told me that it is good if you are a Red Sox fan and us being from the NY area (well need to say more). I watched the DVD and listened to both CD, then promptly gave it back to him and thanked him and said keep it. I am also a long time buffett fan but I dont need this one. Especially since I have a live copy of the Philly shows from last summer. I enjoy them much better. Just my opinion!

I have to admit I was disappointed as well. I can't name one thing in particular but it just felt "lacking" to me. This was the only tour I had missed since 2001 (when I first got into Buffett) so I thought I'd pick up the cd to give a show from this tour a listen. I'll probably just give this to a friend since he has better live albums (and I hate the loose booklet that comes with the Fenway cd).

Not one of my favorites when it comes to the "Live in" series.

It's not really part of that series, is it?

Myself, I still haven't picked it up and doubt I will until it starts showing up in the budget bins.

I wish they wouldn't chop two concerts together. Just pick the bestter of the two and release it as a live album.

I think this happens more times than we're aware of. I didn't realize Little Feat's Waitin' For Columbus was assembled the way it was until I got the deluxe expanded version that came out a few years back. It doesn't bother me that the album features songs from different nights but I had no idea guitar parts were lifted from different nights and mixed in with certain songs.

I guess technically it isn't because it wasn't a part of the Tiki Time Tour. However as a live album, it still isn't one of my favorites.

stupid question.....

I just watched the movie Fever Pitch.
At one point the characters are at a ball game at Fenway and the crowd is singing Sweet Caroline.
Jimmy mixes it in with WDWGDAS on the Live At Fenway cd.

What's the signifigance of singing Sweet Caroline at Fenway?

Well that explains why they sing it and why Jimmy included it in the concert.

It's so much better than them playing "Tessie" by the Dropkick Murphys over and over again :)

I've enjoyed Fenway and it's not nearly as good as Hawaii, with or without the DVD - THAT is the Tiki album to get and from what I've heard the best of the Tiki albums. I even get a kick out of the wind making noise. But Fenway has a lot of energy on it and some cool tunes to boot.

Here's another way to look at Fenway - it's the only album from the LTC tour, like someone else stated. It's got a lot of the same songs on it as other live albums of course (oh of COURSE!). It's got the old days mentality of starting off solo acoustic and having the CRB join in. Some of his notes are off - it is a LIVE album unlike YHTBT, FF and T,TH&S with overdubs where bad notes got out and others cracked or whatever. But it's still bringing forth the obvious - Jimmy is still having a good time. I'm glad there's only one live album from the LTC tour. I'd be happy with one per tour. The Tiki albums are a bit much. From YHTBT to FF was way too long. FF to T,TH&S was way too long. But it did allow one to listen and hear the differences in arrangements - the mariachi horn swagger of Marg. with T,TH&S compared to FF and completely different from YHTBT (duh! right? Everything is different from that album!).

The beauty of the Hawaii album is you can sense a transition about to occur. They had just recorded Conchy Tonk/LTC and played two songs from those sessions. Two or three I can't remember at the moment. Back To The Island for sure. I have the first edition without the songs on it and no extra tray for the DVD. I added the Hawaii DVD to the Mini Matinee #1 (where is #'s 2-whatever?) in a single double jewel case, seeing that the first DVD was from the Tiki tour as well. Makes sense to me.

Maybe someday I'll get the rest of the Tiki tour albums - I only have 2 now - but I'm not going to be sad and lonely, ha ha, if I never get them. And if I do you better believe I'll be making my own Tiki Time Best Of Live Album compilation with all the different tracks making the most of it. I think Jimmy wanted Mailboat to have some diversity with choice of selection, hence the cheap same packaging with a different city and colour for all of the Tikis with the exception to the leigh for Hawaii. Granted, it's not much of a choice for selection har har har - a different song or couple of songs some nights, etc...but Mailboat's discography jumped up pretty quick for his own output. See how that works? Nice innit?

Of course, Coastal Confessions will probably never be released and Wrigley will probably be the last live full length DVD he'll do. If he wants to do right by and for his fans he'll rerelease Margaritavision on DVD and hopefully with a better title.

So enjoy Fenway for what it is - a two night stand that sounds like it was a blast!
