Road trippin' Friday Fives! (Annie's subbing again!)

Post by iuparrothead »

In Mallory's absence, I've been asked to sub in again with the Friday Fives! Since there was a brief discussion of road trips going and then locked this morning, I figured we'd make it the topic of discussion here! :D

"It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, a half pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses."
"Let's hit it!"

When and where was your first big kid/adult road trip to?
Aside from the many, many trips back and forth from college... my first major road trip was when my girlfriends and I drove to Panama City Beach, FL for spring break. We drove all night from Indiana, stopped at quite a few Waffle Houses for coffee & a smoke, and saw a gorgeous sunrise in Alabama. The trip home sucked... hungover, developed bronchitis and got a speeding ticket. :-?

When and where was your first road trip all by yourself?
I drove from Bloomington, IN to Athens, GA to visit a friend that was stationed there in the Navy. It was awesome driving through Kentucky and Tennessee all by myself with my radio blaring, singing at the top of my lungs!

What's your favorite road trip song?
Southbound by The Allman Brothers Band

Any unfortunate road trip mishaps?
The afformentioned speeding ticket. It wouldn't kill me now to get a ticket, but as a poor college student that just spent a week blowing a ton of money on alcohol, it was not what I needed at that moment.

If you could take off right now, to where and from where would you road trip and with whom?
I would love to start in Vancouver, BC and drive down to Seattle and then drive the Pacific Coast Highway all the way south to San Diego.

And I'd take best friend & boyfriend with me... the three of us would have a blast!!!

When and where was your first big kid/adult road trip to?
As a group: Daytona Beach, FL for Senior Beach Week. Nothing like a group of 18 year old guys (and one 17 year old) crossing multiple state lines with a minivan and Mustang full of beer and liquor.

When and where was your first road trip all by yourself?
Ever since I was 16, I was driving from my hometown in Tennessee to my grandparents' in Asheville. But my first trips for fun were runs up to Mary Baldwin College on the weekends during my senior year in high school. Its amazing how attractive a high school senior can look on an all girls campus. 8) First LONG trip by myself was to SOUTHERN Mississippi to visit some Tri-Delts I met at a Debutante Ball.

What's your favorite road trip song?
Just about anything on Bob Seger's Silver Bullet album. "Life is a Highway", "Magic Carpet Ride", "Sweet Melissa", and of course the theme song from Top Gun.

Any unfortunate road trip mishaps?
Like Ann, there might have been a speeding ticket or two. Thankfully most of my mishaps were never much more than driving home hung over. I did wake up in a few places that I was unfamiliar with. Other than that, they were pretty much a good time.

If you could take off right now, to where and from where would you road trip and with whom?
I would love to take off driving west, stopping off at local pubs, and then turn around when I hit the Pacific.

As for with whom, I'd actually love to take off by myself. That way I could stop when I want and leave when I want. Plus, from my experiences, people usually seem to welcome you in more if you are alone. If you are with someone, people often think that you are too busy to stop and talk.
It's your world, I'm just living in it! :pirate:

Spring Break HS senior year,1975. Somehow I talked my parents into letting myself and three friends take our brand new Chevy Impala station wagon(6 gallons to the mile) to Florida. Jeff, Bill, Miles and me drove straight thru to Orlando. did the Disney thing and then went on to Miami Beach, when it was really cheezy and filled with hookers. High School heaven :-?

When and where was your first road trip all by yourself?
Just before Christmas '85. Drove to Mom and Dad's in central Florida, completely on back roads. had a blast. First day got to Jackson Mississippi at first light. Went over toured Vicksburg in the early morning hours with nothing but me and the ghosts around. Thru Natchez and down to the gulf. Cheap shrimpies in Apalachacola and grilled something in a little saloon in Steinahatchie over looking the water

What's your favorite road trip song?
Pascagola Run

Any unfortunate road trip mishaps?
High School trip: Went to ABC Likkers and bought about three gallons of vodka and mega beer and had a bash in the room with some girlies we met on the beach. Woke up the next morning and all our wallets were in a pile by the door. All our watches and class rings and cameras were gone too.

If you could take off right now, to where and from where would you road trip and with whom?
My favorite drive in the world is US 1 thru the Keys. And I would take my beautiful wife of course. Sorry kids, no keets allowed on this one

When and where was your first big kid/adult road trip to?
January 1979. About 30 of us drove non-stop from Maryland to Colorado Springs for skiing and a conference. We got stuck in a blizzard on the way back. It still surprises me that none of us died out there on I-70.... Stooopid kids.... :-? (Of course, there was the one precursor... The point where my parents knew there would be wanderlust issues with me.... I was 14. I was supposed to be at the Mall. I hopped on the bus and went to Boston for the day. Of course, that was the day some idiot decided to set off a bomb at the courthouse in Boston..... I got busted because the return bus didn't stop at the Mall, but on the other side of town, and I had to call for a ride..... )

When and where was your first road trip all by yourself?
I drove cross country alone for a Navy school in 1982. What an awesome trip, but it freaked me out when I was out in the desert and couldn't get a single radio station. I wondered if the bubble had gone up, and I was the only one left. :o

What's your favorite road trip song?
Toss up.... Somewhere Headed South by Hugo Duarte, Southbound by Mac McAnally, or Barometer Soup by JB

Any unfortunate road trip mishaps?
The blizzard was a little too interesting.... :o One car died on us because the gas line froze while the car was running..... Then there was the tractor trailer I almost hit when I fell asleep at the wheel in the desert.... :o

If you could take off right now, to where and from where would you road trip and with whom?
I'd drive cross country. Slowly. First south on I-95, into North Carolina, with a little side trip to Gettysburg and a stop in Richmond, at Hollywood Cemetery. From NC, west on I-40 through the mountains and into Tennessee. I'd stop in Nashville for a few days. Spend a day at Shiloh. Listen to some music. Maybe duck down into Alabama or Mississippi. Then back on I-40 to Memphis, where I'd pick up I-55 south and visit Vicksburg, then West on I-20 into East Texas to pick up ETP, or at least visit. Then either back north on I-35/135 into Kansas and west on I-70; or west on I-20 or I-40 and then north on I-25. Either way, Colorado Springs and Denver are the next stops. North to Wyoming, then west again on I-80. I-80 right into San Francisco, then down the coast until we get to LAX, where we board the plane for Honolulu, and on to Maui....... WHEW!!

When and where was your first big kid/adult road trip to?
I think it was my sophomore year in college, a group of us drove upstate to visit a friend who was going to SUNY Oswego. It was Halloween weekend and I seem to remember there was drinking involved.

When and where was your first road trip all by yourself?
The summer between my junior and senior years of college I got dumped by my girlfriend (and 31 years later if she's aged any better than I have I'd jump on her in a minute ). I packed a suitcase, threw it in the trunk of the car and headed north, then west. I wound up in Canada - Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto - then stopped in Cooperstown and went to the Baseball Hall of Fame on the southbound leg of the trip.

What's your favorite road trip song?
The live version of Whipping Post by The Allman Brothers.

Any unfortunate road trip mishaps?
Not really, no accidents, car breakdowns or tickets. I've been stopped for speeding about 25-30 times but the worst I ever got was a written warning (twice) - no fine and no points on my license.

If you could take off right now, to where and from where would you road trip and with whom?
I would drive cross country. I don't know if I would head straight west from NY or drive down the Atlantic coast then start going west when I got down to Georgia. But whichever way I went, I'd come back the opposite way so I could see as much of the country as possible. As for who I'd go with, I think on a long trip like that my company would wear thin pretty quickly so I'd probably go by myself. But when I got to (or near) a city where someone I know lives I'd probably stop and spend at least 10 or 15 minutes with them.

When and where was your first big kid/adult road trip to?
The day after high school graduation - an "exciting" journey from Harrisburg, PA to Wildwood, NJ. The other 2 dorks overslept so we left late, the weather was lousy, I think we got lost and we could only stay for the day (although I don't remember why). Good times!

When and where was your first road trip all by yourself?
Other than business trips, I'm not allowed out unsupervised! :(

What's your favorite road trip song?
Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner - Warren Zevon. It's a catchy little ditty - my kids knew all the words when they were in grade school.

Any unfortunate road trip mishaps?
A tragic keet-related projectile vomiting incident somewhere along I-70 in Ohio.

If you could take off right now, to where and from where would you road trip and with whom?
Did somebody say the KEYS?!! I'm game ..... I'll just swing by the house, pick up my wife and a few other essentials, and I'll meet the rest of you lunatics on the road. :D

"It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, a half pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses."
"Let's hit it!"
- greatest quote, from one of the greatest movies. Good choice, Annie.

When and where was your first big kid/adult road trip to?
Ex-girlfriend and I went to the Keys for 5 days in college. That was awesome.

When and where was your first road trip all by yourself?
I usually never travel by myself, so the only thing that I can think of is me driving to visit my girlfriend who went to school 6 hours away.

What's your favorite road trip song?
Southbound by The Allman Brothers Band - I'd have to agree (anything Allman for that matter), but I'd also add "On the Road Again" by Willie Nelson. In fact, I have a whole playlist on my iPod specifically made for roadtrips.

Any unfortunate road trip mishaps?
Several flat tires and other stuff. There was one trip that I took with my family, where we went cross country, and we were headed for the Sequoia National Park, which coincidentally, is different than the Sequoia National Forest. We made the mistake of confusing the two and ended up taking a 12 hour detour over a mountain, which set off the rest of the vacation's schedule, as I was to return to college the day we were to arrive back home in Philly.

If you could take off right now, to where and from where would you road trip and with whom?
Hmmm. That's a hard one. I really like to travel, and especially, by car, but I'd rather do it right now in somewhere like Australia, New Zealand, or Europe. I'd really go for seeing the Gold Coast of Australia, or a trip from the southern tip of Portugal, all the way up and through ALL of Europe and down to the Greek islands. If I had to choose somewhere here in America, I'd guess I'd drive along the Cali coast.

I'd take my buddies Mike & Bobby - best friends from HS & college, respectively.
"Oh all the money that e'er I spent, I spent it in good company.
And all the harm that I ever did, Alas it was to none but me.
And since it falls, unto my lot, that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call, 'Goodnight and Joy be with you all.'"

When and where was your first big kid/adult road trip to?
Damn I'm getting old! I honestly don't remember where it was, but it was for a slowpitch softball national tournament we were in circa 1988 - somewhere in Michigan maybe. My teammates laughed for years about something I did when we were drankin, and I don't even remember what that was either! Looks like I need to look up an old friend to refresh my memory.

When and where was your first road trip all by yourself?
I'm drawing a blank for anywhere of any distance back in the day. I drove 2 hours to Middleton earlier this year to hang out with iuparrothead, CaptainP, 7lords, BoozeintheBlender, finsupnorth, Coconut Bra, Beachbum_29, Parrothead26, Chu, Johnny, chavez, and the band!

What's your favorite road trip song?
"One Headlight", "We're on a road to nowhere..."

Any unfortunate road trip mishaps?
I recall breaking up with a boyfriend on one, but then we had to drive home together (at least he didn't leave me stranded), and he got pulled over and got a ticket, which he thought ended the trip with a bang!

If you could take off right now, to where and from where would you road trip and with whom?
I'd head to Dunwoody GA in 2 weeks, with any and all of my area BN buds / the Beach Bum Band!

Addendum: On November 25, I will be partaking in Bill's Excellent Adventure. A solo drive from Ocala Florida area to Iowa. 22 hours straight thru according to mapquest. However I am going to make it a tad longer because I must see the sea. I'll skoot over to I-95 to Savannah and then cut up towards Atlanta, Chattanooga, Nashville, and points north.
