As long as people are different, and we're all different, there will always be intolerance. We don't live in Utopia. And intolerance doesn't necessarily mean prejudice. I don't like listening to all the airheads talking on their cell phones while I'm trying to read the newspaper on my train ride to and from work. That's a form of intolerance on my part but I'm not going to give anyone a beat down to get them to shut up.
Larry, I fully understand your point and I wouldn't argue for a second that Utopia is possible (or for that matter even desirable). But I think the original point of the thread was attempting to deal with the prejudicial types of intolerance (wanting to "smack down" someone just because they're different) rather than intolerance for jack-a$$es (who probably deserve a good smack down). As I said before, I'm always skeptical about these types of "programs", but I'm willing to give them a try if there's a chance of reducing the frequency of the former. As for the latter, you have my blessing to hit 'em with a cane, crutches, walker or roll over their feet with a wheelchair!
Very interesting...

That persona came on the boards being rude and downright nasty to people

That persona and OTE now claim that the unacceptable behavior and attitude were because OTE was doing it at the direction of his professor (who is also a BN'er but who this professor is I have no ideal cause OTE won't say and the professor hasn't come forward and revealed themselves) as research for his masters thesis that he was writing back in the summer.

that's about where this thread picks up
If this story is true, then IMHO, this is academic dishonesty because we were used and abused with giving informed consent. I was taught that research in social sciences is about doing no harm to the subjects.
Actually many BNrs are misinformed that I did any research on this site. Rather I found an interesting comparison in the manner in which I saw others treated as well as the manner in which I was treated. I had numerous conversations with my mentor (also a BNr) and he felt it was worth further investigation. As far as my thesis was concerned the comparison of my experience was a mere footnote in a body of work that was over 80 pages in length. Some people like to make things bigger than they are.
Post all the links and make all the transparent attempts at being the high-road-taking scholar you want.

You have absolutely zero credibility. None.
I am confused. Are there old threads to read that might help here? Are we discussing intolerance or the credibility of OTE? Sorry, I don't understand all the hostility.
Some people were treated to crude and rude comments from OTE when he posted here under another name. He was banned and now, he returns under a different persona and claims that his behavior was for the purpose of academic research.

Wow. Thanks - quick service too. Hey Jodi, we should meet like this more often.
"Oh all the money that e'er I spent, I spent it in good company.
And all the harm that I ever did, Alas it was to none but me.
And since it falls, unto my lot, that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call, 'Goodnight and Joy be with you all.'"

When he and his wife were on the board under their "other" name they were extremely rude, insulting and instigating problems here. I fail to find how the insults and wishes of death made here correlate to childhood bullying. IMHO your reasearch "here" is extremely flawed as you don't know the background of the people you chose to target to bully.
I am of the same mindset. In my perspective, "he" or "they" was the bully, but unless I'm mistaken, the thesis was written based on that persona being on the receiving end of the bullying.
Misconceptions, Rumors, and inaccurate information are often the root of intolerance.
UGH!!! Take a look in the freakin' mirror then!!!

You're full of them in regards to BN! You come in here, sling insults and make rude insinuations about people for months & then insist on the misconception that BN is full of exclusive cliques! BN doesn't exclude newcomers... they are most welcome. Ask mings, ask rsgeist, aske davesnik, ask many, many others.

You are so full of crap. I'm all for inclusion... in society, in the workplace, in schools. But for you to boast about your academic exploits, yet come here and act the way you do is the biggest demonstration of hypocrisy I could ever find!!!
I can state, with absolute certainty, that this is true. Y'all insult me just as much as the long-timers! :D (I feel so loved.) And Jodi always offers me popcorn - good times!
I am expanding to beer concessions as well - but only to my favorites - want to be a part of my clique?

A while back, under a different screen name, OTE was very active on this board... but unlike the persona he is attempting to exude now, back then he was rude, insulting, belligerant, and consistently complaining about how he was treated. His wife logged in under his screen name and operated the same behavior. They both made unprovoked derogatory comments about people and wished unfortunate things to happen to others. Yet through all this, he/they consistently played the victim saying they were treated unfairly and excluded from said 'clique'. All the while continuing to be aggressive and stirring arguments for no reason other to gain attention or to be a jerk... whatever.

Mind you, that's only my perception... please take input from others and form your own opinion.
