Maybe Mexico
Sangria Wine
The Dinosaur Blues
The Other Jerry Jeff
Hairy Ass Hillbillies
Contrary To Ordinary
Head Full Of Nothin'
Looking for the Heart of Saturday Night (great cover)
It's a Good Night for Singing (would love to hear Jim Morris cover this)
So Bad Last Night
Gonzo Compadres
Let er Go
etc.
Not really tropical but my all time favorite Jerry Jeff song is "Hill Country Rain". Dang near gives me chills
Thanks for this list of great songs by JJW.
And you are right...Hill Country Rain DOES give me chills. (Been caught out riding in a few of em, but not DN!!

) I also like Jim Morris's cover of it.
BTW, Dinosaur Blues is a Steve Fromholz song. Jerry Jeff does so many covers I have to look them up to see if they are covers. Great Night for Singing & Head Full of Nothin were written by Bob Livingston, JJ's bass player and Contrary to Ordinary's by Billy Jim Baker...

sonofabeach: you'll have to come to JJW BDB sometime or see him play at Gruene Hall.
Ragtop, who is #1 and #2 in your book?
I must add, when I listen to Sunnyjim, I think he sounds most like Buffett.
(I'm feeling like Scuba Girl!!

I
loved Hugo's first two CDs, but this third one is head and shoulders above the other two, IMHO.
Know what?! I have
Another Day in Paradise in the player. I guess I still have to buy the new one.

OK I was asking because I live in Boise Idaho and get to see two of the groups Here.. Jim Morris and Stars on the Water Both play Boise.
I think Jim Morris probably sells more CDs
and I think Stars on the Water and Jim Morris just about tie for
Miles Traveled.
I think more people go to see Jim Morris
but IMHO he is not as good in Concert
as Eric Stone , Sunny Jim, or John Frinzi (who lurks).
I love some of Brent Burns stuff But he (to me) is more the Court Jester. ( and a heck of a nice guy)
Stars on the Water are a great band to see, they do great covers
and their own stuff is pretty good.
Jah: listen to Eric Stone on the song "and so he sails" WOW
JJW played here ... years back and I missed him....
I guess I will have to get a cd or three...
and of course the Coral Reefers..
But Brent is right.... Jimmy is still the king

Brent Burns doesn't come to Texas much, but everytime I could catch him in Gulfshores, I have.
I'm partial to Sunnyjim also, because he's from Texas. Seeing a show with Jerry Diaz, Kelly McGuire, and Sunnjim is quite the experience. It's always also nice to see Larry Joe Taylor.
I have never seen John Frinzi; I really like his music from Key West during MOTMs tho.
I'll have to check out Stars on the Water.
BTW, I went to a great show last weekend at the local dancehall and saw The Ballamy Brothers. Their new pedal steel player was excellent. They played a very solid show.

My recommendations for Jerry Jeff stuff.
http://www.jerryjeff.com/bymail.html
Gypsy Songman: A Life In Song CD
Cowboy Boots and Bathing Suits
Best of the Rest...the new release of out of print stuff.
Jerry Jeff Walker One and Only DVD.
My favorite of all the stuff is SCAMP!
Down in Texas; Life Is Good!

I left home at 6:00 one Saturday morning to see Gary Seiler play in San Diego. That'd be my top two.
Jim Morris, Sunny Jim, Brent Burns, Eric Stone,Hugo Duarte, Mark Mulligan, Mark Northey and John Frinzi round out the top three.

E are you in love with Emily too???

I've never been to the BDB at Gruene Hall - I always go to the Paramount Show and the silent auction and meet and greet at the Driskill. Now that's a fun time!! I love the Driskill.

now I gotta say if you are even trying to hint that JJW is #2, I think that is a BIG BIG stretch. Granted he helped Jimmy along, granted several artists cover his tropical style songs but lead us into the future, nah. But maybe I am not understanding what #2 means. I feel it means the person dubbed as #2 could continue to bond the parrothead nation. JUST MHO.

and that is not what I was asking I
was looking for the person who sells the most cds
and who plays to the biggest crowds
and who travels the most..
lets all face this right now
Jimmy was an Accident. A wonderus and great Accident
but none the less.........
you can no way plan his career..

Exactly.
I think that one of the biggest/best things that Jimmy has done for us is show performers like Scott Kirby, Gary Seiler, Jim Morris, Sunny Jim, Brent Burns, Eric Stone, Hugo Duarte, Mark Mulligan, Mark Northey, John Frinzi and others that it's possible to make a career out of the music that they enjoy playing and we enjoy hearing.
I wanted to sail the Caribbean and live there since I was a kid, before Jimmy sold his first record. I'm glad that he steered his music in the direction that I was going, and that other artists followed him.

I haven't been to a BDB at Gruene Hall either. I've been to a few Luckenbach shows. JJ also plays two Christmas shows at Gruene hall that are pretty popular. Jerry Jeff is so good about writing new stuff and playing his new stuff at his shows. I hope he has more new stuff this year.
(The Driskill is very nice. We usually stay at Omni tho because it is so expensive. Driskill has some of the best food in Austin if you ask me.)

Who was the writer who sings the song...I wanna sit around and play Buffett all day?
and...I'm not saying that JJW is #2 either. He is just second in my book for another artist is always a must see.

Scott Kirby puts me to sleep but the last 2 times I saw him he had Emily Randle playing with him so that helps.
I like Sunny Jim better solo than with his band.
Can't go wrong with Hugo Duarte.
The Calypso Nuts are a fun pair.
Jim Morris has some good songs but he suffers from Al Gore disease, lack of personality.
I saw Captain Quint for the first time at MOTM and I'd love to see them again. They're a real good band and they have a great pan player.

I enjoy most of the artists mentioned, but find myself listening to Sunny Jim's CDs more than the others.
Definitely agree with Larry about Jim Morris, great music - not a lot of "personality"
One I have not seen mentioned is KD Moore.
http://www.kdmoorejr.com/
He is newer to the game than most of those listed, but his "Headin' South" CD is excellent. He plays frequently with Greg "Fingers" Taylor, and the two of them together put on an incredible show every time! His second CD will be released in January, and it has Greg on all but two of the tracks.

KD played at my bday party in the backyard this year. Great guy, good solid guitar performer, has some good songs of his own.
Honestly, I like Mark Mulligan the best of them all but I am not sure where he ranks sales wise and he doesn't tour much in the USA. Generally when he does it's Arizona.
Also, this thread hasn't talked about Johnny Russler and band but these guys really do a great show.
