Why is it that all the cheap motels (Super 8, Motel 6, etc.), always have free wireless internet, but if you go someplace a lot nicer and more expensive (Sheraton, Hilton, Wyndham), they always charge for internet? I figure a more expensive room should have more ammenities, but maybe I'm wrong.

They figure people that can afford their hotels can afford to pay for the net.

economies of scale. People associate quality with price and money spent, usually. So when you go to Hilton, Marriott, etc. they know that their customers will not feel so turned off by paying for something additional like internet access. These customers are also more likely to use the internet as well. Additionally, the smaller (discount) hotels have to pull ou all the stops just to stay competitve with the larger more glamorous chains. Hampton Inn does free breakfast. They're also more liberal with late checkouts.

The hotel I stay at in Madison when I can't make it home doesn't have free internet access in rooms, but has complimentary internet terminals in the common areas of the hotel.

Hey Jim, ever stayed at the Colonial Inn in Middleton? It's about $40 a night and it's right by CIP? Even has an indoor pool!

No. I stay at the Fairfield. I don't have to pay if I stay there....the company picks it up.

Being a diamond member at the Hilton family, I have free access at the big boys (Hilton, Embassy Suites, etc.).
