In the song, "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year", why are we telling "Scary Ghost Stories"????

There'll be parties for hosting
Marshmallows for roasting
And caroling out in the snow
There'll be scary ghost stories
And tales of the glories
Of Christmases long, long ago

I know of the ghost in A Christmas Carol, but this make no sence to me.

That is a good question, Sidew. I sing along to that song all the time in my car during the season. But I never did ask myself why there is ghost stories during Christmas. But Jimmy cracked corn and nobody cared, but theres still a song about it. Why?

I have heard that song my whole life and never once thought about that line. But it is a very good question!

I've often wondered about this too but always assumed it was a reference to A Christmas Carol which has the ghost of Marley plus the ghosts of Christmas past, present & future.

Someone else has wondered this question. I'm on a journey to find the answer. So far I found this quote from this website.

"(12-18) I think you can put any lyrics you want in a Christmas song, and no one will ever question them. For example, from "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year": "There'll be scary ghost stories/ And tales of the glories of Christmases long, long ago"...I'll buy the second part...but who tells ghost stories at Christmas (and no, Dickens doesn't count)?"

There's also this site, which says that ghost stories were told around Christmas in the 1800s
