Anyone have any other suggestions for good books in this setting???

Of course I have read all of jimmy's books(several times), Corcoran,Laurence Shames, and James Hall.

I am going to start Carl Hiaasens books soon....

But I am looking for other suggestions to help me get through the cold michigan winters...

A few books I recomend for Buffett fans:

The Barefoot Mailman
A Land Remembered
Wind from the Carolinas

Wonderful books. I think the first two should be required reading for any Floridian. The third was recomended by Buffett years ago and is one of my all time favorites.

Enjoy

Have you read any of Randy Wayne Whites' books? They are all Florida based (Randy lives on Pine Island-behind Sanibel) and the critics are calling him the "next" John D. Macdonald..I have to agree. His books take you back to the Islands every time...I have read them all...so start with Heat Islands which is set on Sanibel and Captiva. Randy uses real places and people, plus Randy just opened his restaurant Doc Fords Rum Bar on Sanibel, based on his main character...

If you're into history and non-fiction, I found Last Train to Paradise to be an incredible book. It's the story of building the railroad through the Keys (pre-dating Hwy 1) and gives some interesting history and flavor of Florida and especially Key West....what it was and how it evolved through its first days as a tourism spot. It's a fascinating read.

I must strongly agree with all of you, especially about Tim Dorsey. Not often do avid readers like myself get a chance to laugh out loud. Dorsey does it on a regular basis.

The Travis McGee series also rules, but are somewhat dated.

Hiaasen is, in my opinion, the founding father of Florida writers. his two most recent, Hoot and Flush, are more tailored to the adolescent reader. Still fun to read, but lack the wackiness of the characters found in his previous works.

Thanks for the other suggestions

I just created an entire section in the bookstore where I'm the assistant manager dedicated to Florida writers, seeing as many of them are great, but they aren't as recognized in Canada. All of the authors here I have on display. Hiaasen is by far the best. Florida has some great mystery writers too.

a pretty good author i found writes a mystery series about a PI in key west. the character's name is gideon lowry and the author is john leslie. i found the books at the dollar store but enjoyed them non the less. the character lives in the last private residence on duval (obvioulsy a work of fiction) and plays piano when not solving crimes. very nice descriptions of key west in the books.

In Jimmy's interview before the Philly show, a few "pirate" books are mentioned...one was The Pirate Lafitte...don't remember the author. Jimmy mentions another book he was reading at the time as well. The CD is in my car, otherwise I'd check it out for you...it's a COLD night in CT, too!
I love the Hiassen books! Happy reading!
