Play one or two less non-conference games and cut short the three weeks off between now and the start of bowl games.

Georgia high schools just played their 14th or 15th game this weekend. Most of these college players have been on high school teams that have played similar schedules. I don't think it would be that big of a change for them.
what also makes it tough is midterms and most schools will be shutting down for the Holidays.........you cut the season short......a lot of schools would lose a lot of money.......you can only have 16( 4 weeks) schools in it a tournament.
I have a much simpler way... the top eight teams in Bowl matchups
1 v 8 2 V 7 ETC. then a two week Tourny.

not perfect but in light of what is going on now....
I'd say conference champs should be in the mix too although I'm not sure how many coneferences there are off hand.
Of course I'm speaking as an FSU fan here
Won the ACC although not in the top 8 or 10 or 20 or......

The best teams from the 5 major conferences get automatics. That would be the PAC-10, SEC, Big-12, Big-10, and ACC. The Big East is no longer a football conference. It was created to be a basketball conference. It lost all respectability as a football conference when VA Tech, Miami, and BC left for the ACC. I think this year UCONN had a shot to win the Big East on the last weekend of their season. Even if they had a really good year by their standards, are they, or even Big East champ WV as worthy as a team like Oregon or LSU to be in the BCS?

As for the other three teams, a selection committee, similar to the one that they have for basketball to select the three at-large teams. That way, it prevents a situation like last year when Boise St. beat teams ahead of them in the BCS and didn't get into a BCS game because of Strength of Schedule. If a small school has a good team, they may not have the $$$ to have a strong enough schedule.

The BCS would be used to determine seeds of the 8 schools in the BCS first round, 1v8, 4v5, 3v6, 2v7 on the 3rd Saturday of December Games would be played at the four BCS Bowl game sites.
Semifinals would be the fourth Saturday of December. This would be at 2 other BCS Bowl sites (repeats).
Finals would be at the remaining BCS bowl site for the national championship on the Monday after the 5th/1st Saturday of Dec/Jan.

You could still have non-BCS bowls, this only pertains to the BCS bowls.
Furthermore, I think the idea that they have finals so they shouldn't have a play-off is complete BS. It's all about the $$$. If Penn St. had the opportunity to play an extra 3 games and get the extra dough, they'd do it in a heartbeat. Plus D1 is the only football conference to not have a play-off. If they can do it at D1-A, D2, and D3, they can do it at D1.
I would have to disagree on the big east being a football conference...........until this year you could say the same about the ACC........the big east had 2 top 25 schools this year , and the schools from the ACC that were in the top 25 were from the big east last year.....Pitt , West Virginia, Syracuse, Louisville are or were very good teams at one time....as for UCONN....they are going in the right direction.....and for the record they had no shot at the Conference......They could of been bowl eligible with a win.......also S. Florida is up and coming........So saying the big east isn't deserving now in or in the future is ridiculous......just like the ACC it will take time.

This year, the BCS is parading their matchup of USC vs. Texas as proof that the BCS works. They'll ignore all other problems, including the fact that it has been 4 years since they got a championship game that people DIDN'T complain about!

West Virginia IS worthy of the BSC bowl they are in. Regardless of belong to the Big East, they are one of the best teams in teh country this year... West Virginia has a very strong football program and is getting better every year under Rich Rodriguez - don't count them or the Big East out just yet. Yes, the Big East is not a strong football conference right now - but give it a few years and some heavy recruiting and I believe the new Big East will revive itself!

As far as Auburn goes, not only did they not win there conference, they didn't even win their division. What was interesting this year is that there were no at large selections. All selections were automatic.

I went to school up in VA. All I heard about was VT, UVA, and WVU. WVU has a decent program, but when compared to some of the other schools and conferences around the country, they lack a little.

You have to admit that the Big East took a big hit when Miami, VT, and BC all bailed.

I wouldn't say that WVU lacks when it comes to football. No, they are not quite where they want to be -like the USC's of football, but overall, the program is doing well and is getting better each year - WVU has gone to bowl games 8 of the past 9 years - and Rich Rodriguez is a hell of a good coach. I have faith in my team! Oh, btw, this WVU team is a young team, so look out for them next year too :-D

With Miami, Florida State, Virginia Tech, the ACC is no longer a basketball conference.

it's still a good basketball conference, but it's definitely not as strong as the Big East.

Yeah, those silly schools like UNC, Duke, Wake, and sometimes Maryland or NC State really don't know too much about basketball.

ya i guess Syracuse, Louisville, UCONN, Villanova, West Virginia, Marquette, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Cincinatti, DePaul, Providence -don't know much about basketball either.

the Big East is CLEARLY the strongest overall basketball conference now.

3 out of the last 5 champions... ACC
4 out of the last 5 tournaments have had an ACC team in the final game

Top 5 Champions: UCLA, Kentucky, Indiana, UNC, Duke
Top 5 Final Four Appearances: UNC, Duke, UCLA, Kentucky, Kansas

I don't see many Big East schools on that list. I will concede that the Big East won the two championships that the ACC didn't win. However in the history of March Madness, they just aren't there.
