Oxymoron Of The Day

Post by AlbatrossFlyer »

today's oxymoron can be found in the following new story. the story itself is not important just the prof's union card and anti-globalization stance...

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (AP) -- A professor who also is an outspoken anarchist has agreed to leave Yale University this spring, dropping an appeal over whether his termination was politically motivated.

......

Graeber said relationships with his peers became strained after he joined activist groups and began appearing at anti-globalization protests and in newspaper articles. He carries an Industrial Workers of the World union card."

I'd feel bad for you, but I have no soul.....

Actually, the IWW, Industrial Workers of the World, or Wobblies have quite a strong position on globalization and look to promote anti-capitalism and worker solidarity all over the world. Doesn't sound so oxymoronic to me....

If he's a member of a group that is pro-globalization and he is appearing at anti-globalization rallies, isn't that the oxymoronic factor that AF is referring to?

pro on the idea of one big union that isn't fettered by national boundaries; anti-"globalization" of shipping jobs overseas to places where there is less environmental/human rights/employee protection.

"globalization" is a polite term for removing middle-class jobs and lowering the standard of living for most of a nation's population.

another way to think of the IWW is that if corporations are allowed to operate across national borders and retain their identity, the IWW would like to do the same for workers.
