What Key am I in? (Musically & Geographically)

Post by CrznDnUS1 »

I have been playing guitar for many years and have no formal training. I basically bang out the cords and have fun. If it wansn't for the little pictures of the cords on top of the music I wouldn't be able to play a note. So my question is, I know the 1-4-5 rule and want to start putting a harmonica into my music, but am not sure of which key I should be using. Is there a general rule of thumb I can follow? Any help would be appreciated by my listeners.

Thanks,

Sorry, I got nothing musically.

The only thing I know is, if you don't C sharp you may B flat. But I think that only applies to crossing the street.

we can do that.

I see palm trees, drunk people, and more drunk people on mopeds.

Thanks,
Harmonicas come in various keys; just pick a harp in the key you are playing.

Lat time I saw Fingers play, he had a harmonica case with at least a dozen different blues harmonicas, he just grabs the one that matches the key of the song being played.

dude, that is my problem. I don't know what key I am playing in. I know I am playing G-C-D-G, but what the heck key it in? fro mwhat i saw on google it says to look next the the trouble clef but what i am just playing tabs or a bunch or cords. Uhhhh, maybe I should have payed more attention in school when we had music class in jr high. There's gotta be some sort of rule like if you start on a G cord you are in G, but that's too simple.

OK, here we go again. I am just passing the 7 mile grill heading onto the seven mile bridge. What Key am I in?

It does seem too simple, but for many songs, the chord that it starts in is also the key that the song is in. To add on to your question, the key of a song is generally determined by the melody(i.e. notes that are sung in the lyrics). In a generic world, if a song was in the key of G, all melody notes would fit the G major scale. The major scale is the do-re-mi song we all know, but it can start on any note. But melody does not always mean sung lyrics. Take Bannana Wind for example, its an instrumental, but the melody is clear.

If you want to have some fun and add a harmonica, I would suggest buying a cheap harmonica in the key of C. It will only contain the notes in the C scale, but you'll also get a lot of hits with a song that is in A minor, and G. Blow some notes along with the songs you have been playing, and see what you think.
