On Sunday go to Duke's and see Henry Kapono! You'll love him!
www.dukeswaikiki.com
Also on the east end of the island (don't ask me the exact location but) you will see a road wind up a big hill. The road is closed but park by the barrier and walk up the road. It leads to a cliff edge over the ocean, there's a lighthouse that you can look down on and the views are just incredible!
Have a great time! I can't wait to go back to Hawaii!

Yes we will be renting a car. My hubby has meetings three of the days we are there and so I will prolly be on foot those days, but when he's free we plan to explore.nycparrothead wrote:Are you gonna have a vehicle while you're there? If so, I can recommend a couple other things, just gotta take a few minutes to google stuff cause I can't remember the names of anything....

Here's the lighthouse trail I was talking about.. Check out makapu07. For some reason it defaults to a view that's not nearly as good...

And there's a rain forest trail that is AWESOME! Gimme a couple minutes and I'll get you the name and location...

Here it is: http://www.backyardoahu.com/index.html?mnoa1.htm
THis is an amazing walk (bout 20 minutes in and 20 out).. Once you get in there it's hard to believe you're actually in hawaii! Bring a sweater cause it's about 20 degrees cooler there than by the water. At the end is a really cool waterfall and if you ignore the Danger sign that says something about a rockslide 3 years ago and hop the rope you can swim at the base of it... Very cool stuff!

Thanks! This will be our first time on Oahu. We've spent time on the Big Island and Maui previously.

Old info but look up "The Hideaway" in Waikiki. There were two of them when I lived there, both great bars, but one was actually in the center of a city block and would be more to the liking of any PH.
Since I was there, the road has been completed so you can go from the west side to the North. Not sure how populated it is but when I was there, the road ended at 9 O'clock (west side of the island) just past Makaha. There was a very awesome/long/barely populated beach there. (We just called it "The end of the road" beach. Nice break from the swarms especially if you can now continue around counterclockwise to the North shore. But that was in '92 so no promises. Might be all condo's by now.
Don't think you'd want any other tips. (I was just out of college and in the Navy... wasn't exactly touring if you know what I mean
)
P.S. You can stop by Aeaia just so you can say you've been in a place with no consonants.

The road's not there any more... Farrington Highway doesn't go all the way around. To get from Makaha to the North Shore, you have to either hike around Ka'ena Point or drive all the way back south, then east, then north up through the pineapple fields.Down2TheC wrote:Since I was there, the road has been completed so you can go from the west side to the North. Naturally, you must see Pearl Harbor. By the by, they have a coffee machine in the courtyard area that has the best stuff... couldn't believe it.nutmeg wrote:Anyone have favorite places to stay or to visit on Oahu?
Also, Tiki's Grill & Bar on Waikiki... http://www.tikisgrill.com/home.html
Great place, good food, good drinks
Enjoy

90-92. Glad they didn't complete the road! So Makaha must still be nice, lush, and remote. (I lived out there for over a year of that time) I was working off the Streets 2005 map. I looked it up once upon a time and saw that they drew a road that continued around. Must be the same old dirt path they had back in the day. (You'd need a pretty awesome four-wheeler) Anyway, thanks for correcting me!SchoolGirlHeart wrote: The road's not there any more...

So still a recommended beach to get away from crowds? The other bonus is that if it's raining on the rest of the island, it's probably still dry over on the West side. Just keep the windows up rolling through Waianae. (again... 13 yr old info)

Now you can't even get a four-wheeler all the way around. Part of the dirt road has fallen away on the Makaha side, and there's a gate keeping vehicles off the Point on the Mokuleia/North Shore side.

We're going to celebrate our 20th anniversary by going over at the end of February. We were there a few years back and loved it. Going to try a lot of different things this trip.
Great tips and ideas, folks. Any idea if Jake Shimobukuro will be playing anywhere? Definitely will be at Dukes on Sunday!
