 And that's something I never knew. I came into this planning a little late, and based on the title of this thread, I just thought it was just trying to plan a annual BN gathering. :) Now I understand it more.

So, can we pick Denver? :P

Oh yeah... After reading Ann's comments, I'd just like to add that my Denver ploy is just that... Not to be taken seriously. In fact, my vote should mostly not matter since there's only a 1% chance I'll be able to go anyway, no matter WHERE it is.

I got a "girl" trip last year so he gets a "guy" trip this year.

Good point babe! What I want to do is find a startign point. We make it a kick ass time... we reqruit a few new BNers.... then people start talking then the next year we move to another city... then it gets bigger... then we move again.... then it gets bigger.... then pretty soon we have a bunch of BNers that can say "I remember the first time we did this...."

OK... my Tampa and Nashville friends... where can we play?? We need a venue.

I guess I have to apologize for not being 100% clear, but Ann (iup) is right.

1st post 1st thread:
Tiki Bar wrote:This is Johnny's idea, and I think it's a great one!

It will actually be a worldwide BN gathering, held in the states!

We want as many BuffettNewsers as possible. West Coast, East Coast, Midwest, all over the place to join at one central location with a Friday meet and greet, and a Saturday show with Johnny Russler and the Beach Bum Band, and possibly other bands as well.

We want the only costs to BNers to be travel and accomodations, and whatever the cost of booze would be. We want to have a Huge Buffettnews.com tapestry made up where everyone who attended can sign. If it becomes an annual Phlocking we can retire the signed tapestry somewhere from year to year.

PHJim has given his approval for it to happen, and part 2 will be determining the location. Our first step is gauging how much interest there will be.
1st post 2nd thread:
Tiki Bar wrote:Part 2: Location location location

Johnny of the Beach Bum Band is hoping to plan a worldwide BN gathering, held in the states! There is considerable interest based on the first poll.

We had some ideas thrown out there... which would you prefer?

Disclaimer: This is for planning purposes on possible city to pursue further... nothing's in stone!
The enthusiasm's great!! The suggestions are great!! It is for BN, and in hopes as many BNers as possible will attend!! Everyone does have a say in it, but it is Johnny's idea, spawned from meeting so many of us cool dudes and dudettes   all across the country! He's fun, we're fun, and he wants us all to be fun together at the same bat time, same bat place!

For this to happen, it has to have leadership. Entrust in Johnny as I do... he has taken this bull by the horns - let him run with it! (Mixed metaphors! Go figure!) He can make it happen! And that was what phjim gave the ok for... Johnny organizing a national BN gathering.

It appears the next step for this year, is suggestions of venue for Johnny to propose the idea to.

actually... They can certainly decide if they want to play or not, but I am hoping you are not saying they have final say over the city where it is being held?
That's exactly what I am saying. Johnny is the one that originally propositioned the whole idea of a national BN get together where his band would play. At that time, the people that were discussing it agreed that a few cities should be nominated for the location and then Johnny and the band would make the final decision based on what would work best for them and hopefully everybody else. To avoid exactly what is happening in this thread, he was to make the executive decision.

I've seen this all happen too many times here... new places will never stop being nominated, the discussion will never die and a decision will never get made unless there is one person designated to make the decision... no matter the number of polls are done.
ok. I never saw/read that part.

My points, and I do agree that this is turning into a gigantic furball are really just meant to put some structure to the selection process. We are chasing a concept without any anchor points, and (going waaaaaaaayyyy back to those math courses in college) any multivariable equation requires one point to work from and then paring away the crap until you have values for x, y, z, etc.). I have to admit that 6 days into 2006 and this thing is already looking like a 2007 project is a bit silly.

Making a decision based on those criteria so that it is relatively painless for everyone to attend was the whole point. We don't have a date, because no one knows the concert schedule at this point, whether it is the warm-up leg or the whole summer portion (much less the West Coast leg that gets announced at the tail end.)

So: do we do this as a stand-alone or in conjunction with a concert someplace? If the former: we pick an approximate date or two, and start working backwards from there to fill in the details. If the latter: then we have to wait until the schedule is out, and try to put it together on a shorter/compressed window.

Then: take the cities proposed at this point in time and apply the same selection criteria to all. Hockey Parrothead did a great job of describing why ATL would be a good place for this. If a site can't match up to the: easily-flown into/driven to; good collection of hotels (especially if Breeze can help out with this); other attractions (in case people are turning this into a bigger trip/vacation); the average weather of the location at the time of the event; and good mass-transit/transportation network criteria, we really shouldn't consider them.

Then: when we get the final three, Johnny looks at them and makes the final decision based on his own knowledge of connections/venues/etc.

Sound like a workable plan?

I will say again: I don't have any preferences. I have a couple of places I think probably won't/shouldn't make the cut based on the logical selection criteria, but I am also not putting new cities on the list, nor am I pushing anyplace that is closer than an hour flight/5-7 hour drive for me either.

No offense to the Tampa folks, but Tampa really doesn't have a beach. It is however the city closest to a beach on the list.

Or... people in Tampa and Nashville (or people familiar with either city) step up and name some joints to have this event. Then, Johnny can contact the venues, find a date, make arrangements and announce it here.

What Johnny needed most in the first place was simply popular BN opinion where it should be held and venue suggestions... that's all... not math formulas or long-winded plans. The BBB has played all over the country, is very professional and can take things from here with just a few cues from us...

So I'll reiterate what Johnny is asking for... Tampa & Nashville peeps... name some places to have this event!

(p.s. Wrapping this event around a concert date is completely unfeasible, IMHO)

HockeyParrotHead wrote:And as for the criteria thing for ATL ...

a) Easy to get to and cheap....AirTran from almost anywhere.....2-3 hours, except the far left coast. AirTran's fares here make every other airline's fares here lower too, even Delta with enough advance planning. Three interstates for the drivers.

b) Good transportation- Yes, like any city, the cabs can s*** if you don't know how to deal with them. But MARTA (public bus/train system) is quite reliable and as safe as any public transportation, especially if you don't travel alone. BTW, train station is less than 1/2 mile from CiP and a zillion area restaurants and hotels of all sizes and prices. Rental cars are cheap here too, compared to most cities.

c) Other things to do - pro sports (OK, at least they play in the pro leagues - maybe your team will be in town depending on whatever season we're talking about), NASCAR twice a year for "those" fans, great restaurants and bars, Coca Cola museum, Six FlLags, awesome music venues (even if Jimmy isn't here, someone good is always somewhere here), one of the best aquariums in the US (brand new), Stone Mountain (maybe a bit corny, but really cool for those who've never seen it), Lake Lanier (in the summer), Buffett concert for sure this year, Athens (cool college town 60 miles away - home of awesome music, bars and the best restaurant in the south), 12v Rick's & Nicole's house, firstmate's house (aqua is a drawback though), SOASOAPT's permanent retirement home, home of many, many BN'ers and Parrotheads, home of Amy Lee and Nadirah, home of the first Parrothead Club (and they're cool people to meet and party with), many PH phriendly bands (that won't cost this group a cent depending on time of year ... can even get Johnny with enough notice to both of us.

d) We've done BN phlockings in ATL before, big and small, and everyone feels included! ATL is an easy run, and if you can't find some fun in this town, you aren't even trying.

And if R2 really wants to play in labor union buildings, we even have an IBEW building downtown.

No beach though, 'cept at fristmate's house.....and that's gotta be summer though....'less ya wanna ride the jet ski with FourPlay!

drawback????..............been called much worse  :pirate: ....,try and see ya this weekend...u werkin??
