I'm heading to Tokyo in about a month and a half- anyone have any suggestions for places not to be missed? I'm staying somewhere near Yakota AFB.

Biggest thing there is the Karaoke bars. Get your own private room and sing Karaoke and order drinks all night. Fun stuff, especially when your hammered  I will be in Tokyo April 11-15.

Different experience for men vs. women as the bars often assign "hostesses" to flirt with and entertain the businessmen. They didn't have a clue what to do with me.  :-?

Take a day trip to Kyoto (old capital) beautiful temples, history, etc. The public transit system is absolutely amazing.

In downtown tokyo check out Rupungi (i think that's how it's spelled).. REALLY cool bars and stuff.. Although it's kinda a touristy area, but hey, you're a tourist!
Also if you're near Yukota, walk straight out of the main gate and down that street.. it's been a while but I think it's about 200 yards or so on the right there this kick ass noodle house.. It's the whole traditional, take your shoes off at the door thing, very cool!

Unfortunately I got rip roarin' drunk every night I was there so i don't really have much else for ya.. But have a blast!!! :D :D :D

Roppongi... think it is on the silver line subway.

operate on the theory that you are a) never going to see it all; b) going to need to navigate the subway system to get anywhere; c) could spend a day in just one district.

The National Museum is up north near where the Shinkasen leave for the run to Sendai and the northern end of Honshu. Near there is Akihibara, the electronics emporium. There is also a national shrine up that way as well.

Down near Tokyo Station is the Imperial Palace.

South of there is the Ginza. If you go over to the west, you get to Shinjuku, great people-watching on the Red Line. :)

Haha poor Q&S :D

Also, if you plan on traveling around Japan to places like Kyoto that Alison mentioned, it might be wise to buy a Japan Rail Pass. It must be purchased before you go though, it cannot be purchased in Japan.

I am fiercely jealous.

My brother works for Toyota and he goes to the headquarters every two years or so for two weeks of business. I'm seriously considering tagging along on his next trip to take advantage of staying in his hotel room instead of paying for lodging myself. He should totally make room for his baby sister, right?

Thanks guys! My little sis has had Roppongi on the itin since I mentioned I was thinking of visiting.

Luckily we'll have her to help with the navigation, too- I would just have her plan the whole trip, but she mentioned Tokyo Disney way too fast!!

Totally! My little sis is making room in her apartment for Tom and I, so there's no reason your brother shouldn't!

I spent 3 years in Japan, went to a university in Tokyo, I remember Shinjuku was a fun place. But it's been a few years so it may have changed. Go to Tachikawa and let me know if my favorite bar is still there

Hope this isn't too late, I haven't visited CIL in awhile. Most places have been covered, but I'll add my $.02. Roppongi is a must for all westerners, but a small warning, if there is a dangerous place in Tokyo, it's Roppongi. Try the Motown bar, and there's a good Irish pub (I can't remember the name).
If you are there on a Sunday go to Harajuku, they have a, for lack of a better term street party. You can see just about everything there, from Elvis impersonators, punk bands, rock and roll, I even saw some sort of Rocky Horror Picture Show group there once! Very entertaining.

Akihabara is an electronic city, you can find all the latest stuff there, and there is also a great railroad museum there if your into that kind of stuff.

Asakusa has a big outdoor market that's kinda cool and a temple to boot.

The Empirial palace as mentioned, is very near the Tokyo station and has really cool gardens, but you'll have to inquire about opening times. I always stay at the Palace Hotel right across the street.

Within walking distance of the Palace, is Ginza which is way cool at night. Sony has a museum there, and if you find the McDonalds there is a statue of Godzilla (no $h*t).

Kyoto is great but you'll need at least two days for it.

Too much stuff to mention

Have fun

could not remember the name of the district, but Asakusa and Akihibara are close to each other.

The fish market is amazing.. they move 2000 metric tons of fish through the market every day....and the produce market out back....amazing strawberries....every one the same perfect size and color....
The Imperial Palace grounds are cool for history.... The Ginza district is a fun place to go Look around (it is WAY TOO expensize to buy anything but fun to look). I once got barred from entering the Harry Winston diamond store there.......silly american tourist!
Take a bullet train North to see the country side.
Get lost in the subway.....
Tokyo Tower...
Eat fish.....Drink Sake....howl out some Kareoke..
