What about the new album?
I am just curious if anyone has any ideas on what direction Bubba will go with the upcoming album. Do you think he'll continue the country-esque/duet-heavy/cover-heavy style he had with LTC or will he go back more toward his signature island sound?
I kind of expect a combination of both. He's still riding high with country fans and Parrot Heads alike with his country style, but his island/folk/nostalgic style is still very popular as well. To be honest, I think the album will be good no matter what he decides to do with it. I know a lot of you guys will disagree with me on this point, but I think that Bubba, Mr. Utley, and Mac "Sucks Less" McAnally are as good as ever and are cranking out some very good music. Has it strayed from JB's "signature" style? Yeah. Is it still of a high musical quality? Yeah. It's different from what a lot of PH's are used to, but rolling with the punches, I think the music is as good as ever.
What do you guys think?

he did say last year on pre-concert interview that the next album will be a "jimmy buffett album" and not a "license to chill". i guess he meant that it will not be filled with guest artists????

My vote is he will continue with the "duets" type of album. Although I think it'll be with a different music style. He covered both Dave Matthews as well as Jack Johnson on this past summer's tour. At the Nissan show right before he played Tripping Billies, he said something to the effect "that he was just talking with Dave Matthews recently."
I could see him "dueting" with this genre of music as it will open him up to that (younger) audience, similar to the way License to Chill opened him up to modern Country Western fans. Besides I see many similarities in the balladeer-storytelling styles between Buffett/Matthews/Johnson.
Keep in mind that Buffett seems to be 1) and entertainer, and 2) a keen marketer. How many albums has Santana made that were "duets" which opened him up to markets he wouldn't have been in otherwise.
Just my 2 (s)cents. . .bad and horrible.

I agree with you Jahfin, where ever he wants to take the tunes works for me .......but I really hope he isn't ready to do any Sinatra yet.Jahfin wrote:I don't think Buffett has a "signature island style". To my ears he's always mixed Caribbean, folk, rock, country, and various other styles to come up with own sound. It doesn't really matter to me what direction he takes on his next record as long as he's satisfied with the end result.
Doesn't Jimmy's style revolve around where he has been, who he has been with and what he is currently drinking?

While the duet album craze has made a lot of money and won a lot of awards for Carlos Santana, in my opinion it's some of his worst work. I hope Buffett got it out of his system with LTC.SomeGuyNamedDan wrote:Keep in mind that Buffett seems to be 1) and entertainer, and 2) a keen marketer. what I really mean . . . I wish you were here
Buffett has been mentioning Dave Matthews in interviews for years but more from a business perspective than anything else because Dave built his audience the way Buffett has, through grass roots efforts.
Regarding Santana, he made a very excellent duets album called Havana Moon long before he struck paydirt with Supernatural. That album just happened to come out at just the right time.

And you'd be traveling to Wisconsin every other week.LIPH wrote:And it would get all the Alpine whiners to shut up.
As long as Jimmy doesn't do duets with the "turning 60" crowd this year...Dolly Parton, Cher, etc....I'll be okay.

As they're just heading into the studio to record it this month, it'll probably be a while. As a barometer, LTC was recorded in Dec and released the following July. And, some of us are still waiting for the "Coastal Confessions" show from a year ago Dec to be released.FanInCincy wrote:When is this album due out?
