In Crazy Navy Flyer defense, what other word is there to describe a smoker? We have known for how long that cigarettes kill? Since the sixties, right? That's about 35 years of hearing something is bad for you but you still go ahead and do it. I think people that still smoke after everything we know about the harms of smoking have earned the right to be called stupid. Just IMHO.

Well doing dangerous things is a part of life. People like Pilots, Motorcycle Riders, Sky Divers, Bungie Jumpers, Race Car Drivers
Football Players,
People who drive on a road where others drive 3500 lb machines which can kill ,Soldiers and Stunt People I guess are all stupid...... and since most of us drive cars... we are all stupid.
Point being.... have your own opinion.... live your life the way you want and let people make their own choices with the information provided to them.
Using childish tactics like namecalling will not get you any farther in convincing people to cross over to your side.....

Wouldn't it be far more fair to simply say they are making a bad decision instead of labelling them stupid?

Most restaurant and bar employees have little choice in where they work. We don't allow employees to work in absestos, why would we let them work in second hand smoke.
connecticut has exceptions for private clubs and the casinos.

Sorry. I'm just rather vocal when it comes to smoking, I have an intense dislike of the stuff, it's killed too many of my friends and family.
According to the director of the Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention at U. of Wisconson "Take all the deaths in America caused by alcohol, illicit drugs, fires, car accidents, homicide and suicide, throw in AIDS, it's still only half the deaths every year from cigarettes"
I apologize for calling smokers stupid. I suppose a better way to express my opinion is to say that smoking, not smokers, is stupid. Or according to the article, smoking makes people stupid.

Yes, I apologize for calling smokers stupid, just couldn't think of a better word.

In Canada, doesn't the warning label say something like "Smoking cigarettes is more addictive than heroin or cocaine"? That's a pretty strong statement, so please correct me if I'm wrong. I've never really smoked so I don't fully understand how hard it is to quit. From what I hear, it's pretty tough.
I just spent 2 weeks at my mom's house. Although she isn't smoking much now, the smoke is in the curtains and furniture and I'm still feeling the effects 3 days after leaving.
Our 4 year old started having a prolonged asthma attack the day I got back into town. Long story short, we ended up in the ER at Childrens Hospital the next day. One of the main questions everyone kept asking us was "Any smokers in the house?" We don't smoke, and second-hand smoke did not cause his condition. But why would they ask that if it wasn't a known contributor?
Bottom line - I'm for the ban in public places.

Canadian smokes have the best warnings. Graphic pictures of diseased organs, mutated fetuses, and other such things. More fun to collect than baseball cards.

toplessride, you are hurting your own argument especially when you state people drive cars that can kill. if someone is in an accident that is their fault and kills another person they are charged with an illegal act. your point bring us back to the entire argument about this. if you do something in the comfort of your own home that does not affect anyone else it is ok, once you do something to harm another consequences will occur.

My point was not to call people names. I think we have moved on past that.
But cars can kill. When I get behind the wheel of a 3500 lb vehicle I darn well better know how to use it. Thus the implementation of driver's licenses.... but that's a whole different thread!

In all honesty, it really depends on the person. My dad smoked for many, many years. Quit one day about fifteen years ago, and has never smoked again. My husband smokes now and then. He'll smoke a couple for a week, then not smoke another for 3-4 months, have a couple, and not smoke for a year. I can go weeks without having one and not be the least bit bothered. My mom has smoked consistenly for at least the last 20 years that I know of. When asked why she doesn't want to quit, she simply says she doesn't want to. My b-i-l has tried to quit many times for the last couple of years, but it is quite obvious in every way that he has no willpower, and always goes back, complaining it's too hard.
Depends on whether you smoke as a recreation or if you feel you 'need' one, which is usually a bigger issue, because it means you're smoking to cope with something. Some can walk away easier than others.

'Tis the case in many countries besides Canada, as well. Brazil has the same kind of warnings. And in Europe, the warning label simply reads, in large print, SMOKING KILLS.

I got pretty grossed out in Brazil seeing the pics of people with tracheotomies, diseased lungs, etc on thos cigarette boxes. It was foul and certainly worked as a deterrent for me!

For those that insist this issue is simply that the government is infringing and interfering on personal lifestyle choices (all the while not acknowledging the government's responsibility to uphold public health & subsequently reduce the economic burden of providing healthcare for smoking related disease)... take a look at this:

NEVER
Second Hand Smoke has
NEVER killed anyone at all.
If you do not like smoking in a certain resturant or bar, plain and simple JUST DONT GO THERE.
It is a proven fact that smokers are better tippers. They stay after the meal, light up, and are happy. They are also more likely to have a drink with the ciggerate, which inturns makes a bigger check.
I will not support any resturant that does not allow smoking at all.
First you outlaw smoking, next they are gonna make all the girls in Gentelmens Clubs wear full clothing.
I RECOMMEND anyone who is for smoking bans to check out Penn and Teller's ***** episode on Second Hand Smoke. YOU WILL LEARN THE TRUTHS.
Wrong. Dr Penn and Dr Peller are not experts on the subject. Second hand smoke has killed.
I'm not for government interference in my life, just enough to protect me from others.
I say again, smokers are stupid, they're addicts, owned by and paying the cig companies that are poisioning them.
If someone lights up next to me in a restaurant I will assume they are on fire and take all necessary action to put out the fire.
DID I SAY THEY WERE EXPERTS? NO I DID NOT.
Check out the show---they go to the experts in the show.
