suggestions for New York City events in January???

Good suggestions, everyone.
It's my 3rd trip to NYC, actually, but on the first one (1968) we had about $3.98 between us and had to get home to southern Ontario in a VW Beetle . . . stayed and ate and got showed around with relatives!
The second time we were better tourists and did the Empire State Building and the World Trade Centre... it was in 1998... and some shopping and a museum or two. and Cats. I liked the BB King idea, and some exotic food would be good, Cuban/NY, etc... An acquaintance recommended Chinatown, too, especially for dim sum. (A Hard Rock would be exotic for me, cause I've seen lots of them but never gone in, but I think I'll preserve my record on that one!)
A friend said Century 21 is the quintessential NY shopping experience: I remember not enjoying it all on the other trip!
One of our favourite pubs in Kingston Ontario is called the Tir Na Nog, so I guess that means we should check out the NY one! Alternatively, I'll ask my husband if he wants to meet up with a bunch of BN crazy drunks he's never met...

I thought you were a NYer.

The street is Rockefeller Plaza, the office complex is Rockefeller Center. There's no Rockefeller Square.

I like the BB King suggestion (though I've never been there - just wanted to go). And they have a Gospel brunch on Sundays. Yum!!!

I was thinking of Times Square and other things to do in NYC, and plus the JB song "Rockafeller Square," and I got mixed up.

I still reccomend it.

I ate at "Stout" the other day. it's a big Irish pub/restaurant at 33rd or 34th btwn 6th/7th ( or there abouts). Tons of beers and really good burgers. Casual place but I liked it.

I'm sure the restaurant suggestions are good, but I wouldn't spend too much time in the Penn Station vacinity. Not exactly the best NYC has to offer.

One of my favorite restaurants is Rosa Mexicano with several locations including one near Lincoln Center (61st street, btw B'way and Columbus, I think)- excellent margaritas and authentic, upscale Mexican food. Even just ordering guacamole at the bar is fun. Also for a good pub type joint, I like Walker's in Tribeca - used to be JFK Jr.'s hangout. There's also a cute tapas place in Tribeca called Fleur de Sol with live music. For shopping, you can do Madison Avenue which is always nice, but I prefer Soho (although it's usually packed on weekends). Also fun to spend time wandering the streets of the West Village. Arturo's for the best NYC pizza, and a fun bar nearby is Chumley's - it's an old speakeasy and doesn't have a sign - it's on Bedford btw Barrow and Grove.

yeah true still i think for midtown it's not a bad price...

if you want to have some good NY pizza go to lombardi's on the corner of mott and spring street (oldest pizza joint in NYC), then walk south to canal street for the chinatown experience. Also the sony bldg has some great exibits on madison ave in midtown, never been there yet but heard it was great. And yes go to the Empire State Bldg. Go to the Central Park zoo, you might be able to see the animals from madagascar the movie.

Turned out the 100th birthday party kept us very busy... 16 of my husband's 27 first cousins (or possibly 17 of 26?) were in town! And their parents and kids and grandkids! When we had some touring time, we walked down Madison Avenue (in a posse of 8, some well over 6' tall) to the Rockefeller Center and went up to the Top of the Rock. Beautiful day for it.
One day we also walked around Soho, Chinatown, Bowery and whatever lies between. Oh yeah, the farmers' market on Union Square. All very colourful and busy! Walked too much.
He had a sore neck/shoulders so our activities were a bit limited, besides all that partying... and eating!
Weather sure was warm! City sure is big!
We were glad to get home to a smaller-scale city last night, and enjoy all the fresh snow!
New York (like Las Vegas) has to be taken in small doses.

How was Top Of The Rock? I work in that building but I haven't taken the ride to the top yet.
