We will be in NYC for a 100th birthday party (husband's aunt) on Jan. 21. There will be other family events going on (not yet finalized) but we'd like to do some big-city stuff, too. Museums, maybe shows if we get reasonable tickets, clubs/concerts?, shopping?, walking tours?.
We'll be there from Thurs. to Monday and are staying at the Yale Club on Lexington...very central. I am ready for your suggestions!

You can check the schedule at BB Kings Blues Club
http://www.bbkingblues.com/schedule/index.shtml
It's on 42nd St. between 7th & 8th Aves. and the tickets aren't that expensive. A couple of months ago when I saw Sonny Landreth there it was $20, most shows are usually $30-$40.
If you don't mind spending a few hours standing in line you can get cheap theater tickets at the TKTS booth in Times Square.
If you're looking for a place to eat and don't want to go to one of the theme restaurants that cater to tourists, there's a great Cuban place called Victor's Cafe on 52nd St. between Broadway & 8th Ave. They get a lot of theater goers at dinner time so you might have to wait for a table.

As touristy as it is... you must go to the top of the Empire State Building

Another thing - they re-opened the observation deck at the top of 30 Rockefeller Plaza a couple of months ago so in the universe of "tourists things to do" that's an alternative to the Empire State Building. I haven't gone up there yet but I've heard the view is great.

The Hudson tour is nice. I just flew it the other week starting from Farmingdale. Not in a heli though but a four seat single prop plane
If anyone wants to fly around Long Island sometime I'll take you up.

There are always Broadway shows, the stock exchange, Rockafeller Square (no tree, but ice skating, NBC studios, Top of the Rock), catch a Rangers or Knicks game at Madison Square Garden, Times Square, Central Park, etc.
Obviously there are all the tourist-y restaurants like the ESPN Zone, Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock Cafe, etc. In terms of non-tourist-y restaurant I reccomend Tir Na Nog at 8th and 33rd near Madison Square Garden.
