Attorney Hurls 'O' Word At Stern Satcast
Attorney Hurls 'O' Word At Stern Satcast
Jan. 10, 2006
By Tony Sanders
Florida attorney and self-described “anti-obscenity crusader” Jack Thompson tells Billboard Radio Monitor that he’s trying to get Howard Stern “into legal trouble” over the material satcast on his Sirius Satellite Radio show “because I don’t think it’s constitutional to render indecent [content]” through any form of media, subscription or otherwise.
Thompson sent a letter dated Jan. 9 to the Department of Justice’s Bruce Taylor, an assistant attorney general and senior counsel for DOJ’s criminal division. In that letter he suggested that Stern “may have violated the obscenity standard” as spelled out in a specific criminal case, Miller v. California.
Thompson admitted to Monitor that there are laws currently in place that protect Stern’s material from fines and prosecution, but he said that’s not the case if such material were declared obscene.
“What I’ve done is run it up the flag pole,” Thompson said of his letter and the suggestion of obscenity-law violation, “we’ll see if anybody salutes.”
Thompson also told Monitor “I try to be a realist” concerning whether lawmakers and federal regulators have “the resolve” to change the laws that currently shield allegedly-indecent material delivered via a subscription service from FCC fines.
He admitted that it was currently unlikely that such a change in the indecency laws would come about, but he suggested that was the case because “the only thing missing is the political will to act.”

I love that some idiot feels the need to jump right on him, even though he is not on publicly, and I pay good money to be able to listen to him if I want to.
If not, there's this thing that's called channel changer...or even better, the off button.
Sirius even offers a blocking service so you don't even have to get the channel broadcast to you if it so offends.

Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all..

Jack Thompson also tried to get Florida's own 2 Live Crew years ago but failed.
He should call the Get a Life Foundation. I'm sure they could give him a list of friends and things to do.
They gave me BN

I think Howard Stern's an a**hole with no redeeming qualities, but that's why I don't listen to him. This yo-yo shouldn't listen to him either. But if anyone else has the bad taste to want to listen to him, go ahead.

I think his hobby is being an idiot. He tried to get the guys that run the gaming website Penny Arcade arrested a while back. Talk about extremist....

I agree. Why can't people just turn something off if they don't like it rather than try to eliminate it from the face of the earth? The world doesn't need saviors, and even if we did, some jagoff filling frivilous lawsuits just for the purpose of filing them, is not going to be it.

And since it falls, unto my lot, that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call, 'Goodnight and Joy be with you all.'"

"Free speech" in this country is constantly under attack, whether it's King George W tapping our phones and emails or some pantywaist offended by something someone has a right to say.
I tell you, it scares me what's happening to freedom in this country. Most folks nowadays just seem to be blindly willing to give up little bits of their freedom here and there. One day they'll awake to find an Orwellian Society where we all have our personal ID's either tatooed or implanted on/in our bodies and Big Brother constantly monitoring our every move and communication.
It's closer than you might think!
