Mack the Knife duet

Post by springparrot »

I remember reading about the Mack the Knife duet with JB and Frank.
Frank says something about the band Swinging, Jack and Jimmy says, "that's Jimmy, Frank".
What's the story?
Was someone else suppose to be doing that duet besides Jimmy?

I don't think Frank was even in the same room with many (if any) of the performers that appeared on his two duets discs. A "senior moment" is also entirely likely.

I agree---I heard they were done separately, but just wondered about the Jack remark.

I always thought that it was done intentionally to add a little bit of humor to the song :-?

none of the duets were done in the same room, some not even in the same counrty and jack was a name FAS used all the time in referring to people and i think it wsa probably Jimmy's ad lib to include his name

My interpretation was that Sinatra was using the name Jack as a general term for any guy. Kind of like that Seinfeld episode where Jon Lovitz plays that annoying "cancer victim" character that goes around saying "Jack" all the time. Also like appending every sentence with the term "dude."

Upon hearing the playback of pre-recorded Sinatra part, Jimmy decided to have a little fun with it, and acted as if Sinatra really referred to him as Jack.

My $0.02, and you get what you pay for :)

Yeah, "Jack" in Sinatra's heyday was used much in the same way "dude" is today, as a generic reference to someone....

Edit: cross-posted with dan there... you would also hear folks like sammy davis calling people "cat"...

My interpretation too... I seem to recall Joe Piscapo's Sinatra throwing it around on SNL skits...

In the video duet with Bono, they were shown together in the back of a limo. They actually never were together for any of the video...........
