Friday Fives - Home Sweet Home

Post by buffettbride »

1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?
Geez! Lots! 15 since I was born. Mostly in the Denver suburban area, but 2 in Winona, Minnesota.

2. Which was your favorite and why?
Hmmm. My favorite was probably the apartment I shared with my ex-best friend Ashlee in downtown denver. It was just before I got pregnant and the first apartment I ever actually picked out on my own. It was just the cutest, most eclectic apartment and I loved it. It reminds me a lot of that song by Martina McBride called This One's for the Girls. We totally lived on Ramen Noodles and Spaghetti Os.

My second favorite would be the house I lived in from the time I was age 2-6. It was before my parents were divorced and probably the only time in my life I can remember as having a "normal" childhood.

3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why?
House hunting is stressful, but moving itself I find exciting. Although, the last few times I've moved I was either pregnant or had a sprained wrist, so I really didn't do much of the work, so of course it was more exciting than stressful. Our last move from our rental to the house we own was definitely pretty stressful because my son was only a few weeks old and I was still boobie-feeding.

4. What's more important, location or price?
Location, location, location. We bought our house because it was in our price range, but we're on a quiet little cul-de-sac and have great neighbors.

5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?

All of the above... A quiet place in the country. I love the feel of being in a small town. Even though I love living in the city, there's just not a lot of space or privacy if you want it. I have this thing for bathrooms and would want a killer spa tub and a great big shower and a potty in a separate room with a door that closes. Lotsa space for the kids to run around and a separate garage for "project cars" so I could park mine in the one attatched to the house!

1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?
Three. My parents as I was growing up, our first house in Richboro, and our current house in Berks county. Four if you count my mother in law's basement when we couldn't afford to live anywhere else :)

2. Which was your favorite and why?
Our current one, even with the snooty area we live in. It doesn't have the problems our previous house did, and it's much bigger than my parents home. (Our previous home was built by a barely reputable builder that we did not know at the time. Nothing but problems :x

3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why?
Stressful, but fun in a way. Because our entire family chipped in to help move, it was cool having everyone together for a couple of days to unpack. But packing up to move absolutely sucked. Between the two of us, we have so many things that needed to be hand wrapped and packed that it was months of packing up before we even moved.

4. What's more important, location or price?
Location. You all know my dealings with my area. I no longer care what I need to pay, it's going to be about location when we move again.

5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?

Spacious areas. I hate small rooms and small areas. I much rather have big open areas and lots of natural light. Woods and a natural setting (which I did luck out with in our current house, we have a great forest setting out back) without being too close to any neighbors. An inground pool or enough backyard space for me to put one in. That's really about it. I'm not very picky about the house I live in. I can make whatever I live in a home :)

1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?

10, soon to be 11.. most were from age 18 till now

2. Which was your favorite and why?

I think my favorite will be the one I will move into beginning of March. I got to pick everything in this house down to the color of the grout. It is also my FIRST house. I am super excited!!

3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful?

I HATE moving... it may have something to do with the fact that I have done it way too often over the last few year. I hope this next move is the last for a very long time!

4. What's more important, location or price?

Location... Mike and I are building a house we can't really afford. Location was key.. it is in our home town and close to family and friends. We are in a new subdivision with lots of young families (we hope to start our own in the next couple of years) and are on a cul-de-sac. We will be one of the first to move in on our street giving us a great chance to meet our neighbors!

5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?

All of the above and then some! I have always wanted a huge yard and a wrap around porch. Of course you need the pool/spa/outdoor kitchen/movie room/huge master bedroom & bath! I have big plans for my dream house... just don't have the budget right now

1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?
I grew up in the same house from the time I was born until I was 18. My parents moved to a different house that year. I won't count college dorm rooms, but if you count the apartments I've lived in, plus those two houses and the house I live in now, it would be only be five.

2. Which was your favorite and why?
Definitely the house I grew up in, for the simple reason I grew up there. The house was nothing really special--3 BR/2 BA ranch--but we filled that house with a ton of love and all of my childhood memories are there. And it had a great big yard for us kids to play in and it was in a good neighborhood with lots of other kids our age to play with.

3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why?
Definitely stressful. I hate moving...maybe b/c I didn't have to do it at all until my adult life, it wasn't something I was experienced with. We bought our house 2.5 years ago and decided that would be the last time we moved for a LOOOOOONG time.

4. What's more important, location or price?
Unfortunately, price was a bigger factor for us b/c we just don't have a ton of money. But we luckily ended up in a good location anyway. But we were pretty restricted as to what we could afford.

5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?
My dream house would be on a lake. I used to want to live on the ocean, until recent hurricanes made me rethink that. But I would love to be on some kind of body of water. I would want a nice yard for our kids to play in. A spa bath would be great. I would also love a walk-in closet--the one we have is tiny. And a fireplace. I would love to have one of those "plantation" style houses--white with a big wrap-around porch, like you see in Charleston or Beaufort, S.C. And a back deck would be nice, too. And a big kitchen....our kitchen is small. See....I could go on and on and on.....about a house I'll never own. :( (It's fun to dream, though.)

. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?

3 with Mom and Dad, Morton Grove Illinois from 1960-82 (less college)
5 in college
6 in baseball
3 since moving back to Clinton in '92 (rent, rent, buy)

2. Which was your favorite and why?

Probably my current house, its the first I've owned. But the memories of growing up and all the hiding places and my friends, makes my Morton Grove home a close second

3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful?

Exciting when I was young. A chore when I was in baseball, awful now

4. What's more important, location or price?

Price with a good location

5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?

+/- Five acres, with a pond and woodlot. At least an acre of that from the house to the pond landscaped beautifully. Screened in porch with outdoor hot tub. Several fireplaces and a large room for entertaining, with a bar etc. Maybe a small barn and a couple of horses.

1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?
I lived with my parents until 18, then a dorm, then an apt off campus, then a house off campus, then a house back in Fort Wayne, then an apt in FW, then the current apt I'm living in now in Chicago... of which I've never lived in a place longer than the house I grew up in than the place I'm in now. But hopefully, I will be in a new apt by May or June!

2. Which was your favorite and why?
That's tough. It's a tie between my house I lived in my last two years of college in Bloomington... cool basement, porch and huge back yard... all great for parties. I also loved my apt in Fort Wayne... a 1200 sq ft 2 bedroom apt for only $400... I'll never have that again!

3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why?
STRESSFUL!!! I hate moving!!! Moving to Chicago was one of the worst times ever for me! I did it all in one day with only my roommate to help. My landlord & parents helped move a few heavy things into the apt, but otherwise it was just the two of us... brutal!!!

4. What's more important, location or price?
It has to be a good combination of the two. I can't live in the ghetto for cheap, but I can't live in the super cool neighborhoods if I can't afford to buy groceries because my rent is too high.

5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?

A 7'+ long jacuzzi bathtub!!! I've never lived in a house with a bathtub long enough for me to fit! Whenever I finally own my own house, that's the first thing I'm going to do to the place is make my dream bathroom. Oh, and I need to have huge closets for all my clothes and shoes! :P

1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?
NOT counting the places I lived in while I was in the military all those years, a total of 13

2. Which was your favorite and why?
The beach house I lived in from 1979-1983 in Sunset Beach on the North shore of Oahu. I really don't have to explain why, do I?

3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why?
VERY stressful. It's a pain in the a$$ no matter what anybody says. It takes every last ounce of energy just getting it done and hoping it all goes well. If I ever leave the house I'm in now, it'll be because I'd be moving to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.

4. What's more important, location or price?
Both are equally important. A great home in a great location is fantastic, but if it's out of my price range, it's really not doing me a lot of good, is it?

5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?
HAS to have a big yard for my dogs to play in, a nice kitchen because my wife loves to cook, and a patio deck and seperate den for ME to do what I like-grill steaks/burgers/brats/all of the above on the patio, and a den for me to watch MY T.V. shows and DVD's, play C.D.s, and just relax in. (The living room belongs to my wife). A fireplace is an absolute must to get through these midwest winters too.

My dream house would be on a lake.
I was blessed to grow up in a house right on the lakefront of a decent size boating and skiing lake in northeast Indiana. It was a wonderful place to grow up that many of my friends I've taken there over the years are very jealous of. If that's what you want for yourself and your children, I highly recommend, for obvious reasons, finding a way to live on a lake! Soooo much fun for kids!!!

1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?
Nine, 1 in the Denver area, then the rest down here in southern Colorado

2. Which was your favorite and why?
Probably the house I spent my grade school years in. Good neighborhood with a lot of space to ride bikes and whatever, plus I had a bunch of friends that lived in the neighborhood, so I wasn't home that much :)

3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why?
I hate moving. I don't find it particularly stressful, but I just hate the having to pack all that stuff, and then the heavy lifting involved. I ended up with muscle spasms after the last move.

4. What's more important, location or price?
Both and neither. Most important to me is having a place to call home, and a place for my kids to go outside and play. I guess being closer to a park would be nice. (Although in the small town(city?) I live in, you're never too far from a park) I have to have amenities like high-speed internet, and cable tv, so location is important in that aspect. I wouldn't want to live in the boonies or the ghetto... I guess ultimately, location is more important to me than price, but once you have it narrowed down to a few options, price comes into play.

5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?
My dream home would be Mediterranean in style (not contemporary Mediterranean, but more old Tuscan style) and have a game room with table tennis and air hockey for my kids, along with a large master bathroom with a whirlpool tub for my wife and a big shower with multiple showerheads, and a nice kitchen. It would also come with a gardener (I have the hardest time getting grass to grow in my backyard). Would also be nice if it was overlooking the ocean, or on a beach somewhere :)

1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?

2 houses growing up, 4 or five apartments during college, two houses since college - plus a summer home that has been in the family the whole time

2. Which was your favorite and why?

Current one. Space enough for guests, wonderful location, screened pool, big lot on a pond

3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful?

Our last move was an adventure. Neither Lacey or the girls had ever been to Orlando before getting off the plane upon arrival. We were in apartments for about a year until the Texas house sold (didn't count that in question 1) so we had a three part move getting into the current house

4. What's more important, location or price?

Location. We could have paid alot less in other areas of town when we bought, but the convenience of nearby work, shopping, restaurants, entertainment and healthcare would not have been the same somewhere else

5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?

We are in our dream house. There are some updates we will do (new spa, rescreen the pool, add wood flooring) and we are just getting started with the tropical gardens between the house and the pond, but we call this our pine box house (cause we don't plan to leave til they carry us out in a pine box)

1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?
Too many to count.

2. Which was your favorite and why?
Hand down, my apartment on Coki Point, St. Thomas. It was right on the water with the most incredible view of St. John, Tortola and some of the other smaller islands. I could sit on the terrace all day taking in the view, listening to the surf, watching the pelicans fish and read.

3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why?
I've found it to be both, depending upon the circumstances.

4. What's more important, location or price?
Location

5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?
Ideally, a little bit of space for my boys to run around in. Since having a hot tub, that's definitely something I wouldn't want to be without for very long. I'd also like to live closer to work; my commute at the moment is way too long.

A house is just a building. Being with your loved ones makes it a home.

1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?
11 in total. 2 houses, 1 townhouse, 1 Villa and 7 apartments.

2. Which was your favorite and why?
First one - lived there the longest (16 years) and it was in Sunset Boulevarde - we thought we were posh  . However, that was where I spent my childhood and the only place I have memories of my father being "normal"

3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why?
Last time it was extremly stressful - I pretty well lost the plot. Just returned from USA - jetlagged - moved house within three days of getting back to Australia ....... never do that again!!! - otherwise I usually find it exciting, as I move because I choose to - the last time was a forced one - owner was selling

4. What's more important, location or price?
Location + price  - I got both - good price - in yuppiest part of the city - right near the beach and pay no where near what anyone else here pays 8) (it pays to be a good tennant!)

5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?

No mortgage  Nothing fancy - I am not one for a big sparse "sterile" type home - just a nice apartment. I would like a cupboard/drawer/vanity/shelf of some sort in the bathroom - that would be a total luxury to what I have now
