Frank - this is awesome!!! Maybe the dog won't have seperation anxiety and tear up things since you already have a dog that it'll have as company.

well you've got a point.

My pup is my bud. She goes with me almost everywhere. If I can just get her to not get car sick. But she's getting better!!! I can't wait to take her to a lake and watch her go nuts in the water. Conisering how she goes nuts in the water puddles it should be great!!

Wow...fast forward 15 months...

Well, I had pretty much forgotten about this until yesterday, when the guy comes into my office with his *new* guide dog. The first words out of his mouth are "so, do you still want to adopt Indy?".

Since the first - and pretty much only - time we talked about it Christine and I have moved into our new home and adopted another dog (we now have 2). This kinda hit us out of nowhere, and we don't know what we're gonna do. On one hand, a 3rd dog is going to make life a bit more difficult (walking them, transporting them, general wear and tear on us and the house). On the other hand, Indy has worked hard his whole life and we feel he deserves to be spoiled rotten during the few years he has left. We can give him a big house, 40 wooded acres to run (16 at the house, another 24 just a few minutes away), we go camping just about every weekend where he will have the river to play in, ducks to chase, days on the boat, etc.

We've talked extensively about the pros and cons, and although we're undecided we're both leaning roughly 60-70% in favor of taking him. I told his owner that we'd give him an answer by tomorrow morning. If we dont take him, his trainer said that he will find a good home for him, and will do the same if we do take him and it doesn't work out for whatever reason.

Decisions, decisions... what are y'all's thoughts - are we nuts for even considering it?

How old is he?
Really, frankie....what do you have to lose?
If it doesn't work out and they will re-home him.....other than the emotional investment.....
I'd give it a go......looks like an awesome doggie!

Paige, he's almost 11, and in relatively good health still. I figure at best he's got 3, maybe 4, good years left.

Easy for me to say, but go for it......he'd love having friends to play with and just chillin' in the country for the rest of his days!
I hear you on the three dog thing....I did that for a while and have sworn I wouldn't do it again.....BUT if the right dog happened along, who knows?

Yeah, and these are 3 fairly big dogs. The smallest is about 55-60 pounds, the biggest is probably getting pretty close to 75 or so.

I SO agree with Paige! I've gone from having two big dogs to three big dogs...yes, it does change things up a bit as far as transporation, bedding, all the day to day stuff. One thing I would never question about you is your love of dogs; PLEASE adopt Indy. I know in my heart that you're the right new parents this sweet thing. I strongly suspect that you'll find deep satisfaction in watching her transition into a life of leisure. Pups that are that committed to serving and pleasing deserve someone who is just as committed to seeing them happy. I really feel that you are. I could keep writing, but I'm starting to tear up.

Well.....it's a big decision.....literally!!!!!

I have been told that life begins when the kids move out and the dog dies. The dog is still kicken'!! Cody is 14.... I cherrish him.... but actually do kinda wonder what life will be like not having to take care of anyone....

Tough decision for sure...but if I had the space...and already had 2 "man" dogs...what's one more?? 15 months later...hmmm...that may be your sign...
