Looking for a basic home computer

I'm not sure if anyone saw my thread about a week ago, but I got a virus on my computer. I got rid of it, but it got me thinking that it's time for a new computer as mine was reaching about 5 years old, and I'm looking for input on what to get. I'm still in the looking stage now, so I'm open to anything: Gateway, Dell, HP, Compaq, Mac, whatever.

The prices have come down sooooooooooooo much for a decent computer, including lap tops............... I use a brand new Dell laptop at work and quite frankly I have been now thinking of getting one for home instead of my regular pc.............. Saves alot of room and w/ a wireless mouse, its a pleasure to use..............

You might want to check out the Gateway and Toshiba Laptops/Tablet computers. Both are running for about $999.00 . I would be sure to get a three year warranty instead of the one year that is offered. The tablets are here to stay. I have a Toshiba tablet coming to me at school within the next week ( I am the director of technology at a local private school). I will let you guys know how it stacks up.

Mac Mini you can't beat the price for the power and functionality provided in this ultra mini desktop computer.

Personally I would stay away from Dell Hell! I know of several people that have not had much good to say about Dell.
But that is your choice to decide.
I would look at local computer stores and shops. Let them know what your wants or needs with the computer are.
They can probably build you one at a pretty decent price and you have local service available when you need it.

I am very happy with my Dell laptop, which replaced a Toshiba laptop that was 5 years old. I figured out which Dell model I wanted, and what configurations, and then kept checking the weekly specials (which vary tremendously) until the best deal came up. I have not had problems, and the only time I had to call for technical support, I was very lucky, didn't wait too long, and got the problem resolved easily.

buy a Mac, simply put, NO viruse, NO spyware, about 3 years ahead of Windoze.
To do the same with the free software they give you you'd spend another $500-700 on that cheap Dell. Then it still woundnt be able to do all the stuff as seemlessly as I can on my Mac. Just look at the iPod, its 1/100th as cool as my iMac (& its pretty cool!)
Just makes no sense to me why people fight their computers as much as they do. Ease of use should be the #1 thing ALL computers strive for. Check one out, you'll be amazed.

I have a Dell notebook and haven't had one bit of problem with it. In fact I LOVE it so much that when we get rid of the desktop we'll be buying a Dell. I've also got a dell printer combo with scanner, fax and copy and no problems with it - the only problem I have with the printer is you have to get your cartridges thru Dell but then there's a upside to that. They come to your door.
And Vinnie - you're right. Wireless is so nice!!! My notebook and printer are both wireless and it's so nice!!! You just have to take extra precautions to protect your network.

I realized after I posted, all it gives you are the bare necessities. You have to pay extra for things like Microsoft Office, and other stuff like that.

If you need microsoft office but don't want to pay for it, try
http://www.openoffice.org/ It's an open-source office suite that will save and use in Microsoft formats. There's a reliable company behind it (Sun Microsystems) and Google has just recently signed a deal with them... They've got Bill Gates on his heels.
What do you need the computer to do? That will determine what components you'll need, and ultimately the price....
